North Coast Men’s Chorus Punctuates Gay Marriage Rally

CLEVELAND, OHIO –The North Coast Men’s Chorus will place an exclamation mark on Friday’s Courthouse demonstration calling for the legalization of gay marriage in its up coming performances of “Only In The Movies,” at 8:00 PM, Saturday, March 27 and 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 28.

Demonstrations in favor of legalizing gay marriage at the Massachusetts State House sparked the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus to release a recording of “Marry Us,” a song the North Coast Men’s Chorus has performed several times in recent years. On learning of the activities in Boston, there was a surge of opinion from within the NCMC’s membership to add the piece to “Only In The Movies.” One member’s comment was, “We should sing it at every concert until we don’t have to sing it any more.”

Richard Cole, the Chorus’ Music Director, responded by explaining, “this show draws from music from the movies. Somehow, it just doesn’t fit here but, undoubtedly, we’ll do it again – maybe in the near future. We have programmed a couple pieces, back to back, that do make a strong statement about gay marriage, particularly now.” He was referring to “Don’t Mary Me” and “San Francisco.” In addition to those pieces, Cole intends to fully underscore the struggle for the freedom to marry in the second half of the show, “in a song that’s all about making our hopes and dreams come true. What if we were free to marry? What would it look like? We have the opportunity in this show to cross the line into ‘What If Land’ and I think we owe it to ourselves and the public to do just that.”

Perhaps the highest profile gay organization in Northeast Ohio; the North Coast Men’s Chorus is an all-volunteer organization. Founded in 1988, the NCMC is a community based musical organization which affirms the gay experience by presenting entertaining, quality performances for diverse audiences; providing a supportive environment for its members; and promoting a positive presence in the gay community and beyond.

This Season’s holiday show, Sugar Plum Fairies sold out. Tickets for Only In The Movies are currently available on-line at www.ncmchorus.org or by calling 216.556.0590. ($15 in advance, $20 at the door.)
