The Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra of Bay Presbyterian Church will present
its annual Palm Sunday Concert, Sunday, April 4th, at 7:30 p.m., in the
church sanctuary, under the direction of James Traxler. Joining with the
BPC choir are singers from Trinity Lutheran and other churches.

This year's concert will feature the "Requiem" by Maurice Duruflé, as well
as other choral, solo, and instrumental selections. The theme of the
concert is “Embrace the Cross,” as preparation for entering into the events
of Holy Week. The concert will be in a worship setting, and the “Requiem”
is in honor of the departed saints of Bay Presbyterian and Trinity Lutheran
Churches over the past year.

The “Requiem,” written in 1947, is a quite extraordinary fusion of Gregorian
chant style vocal lines with Impressionist style accompaniment by organ and
orchestra. The result is a work of depth of feeling with a rich, lush
sound. Like Fauré before him, Duruflé focuses on the true meaning of
“Requiem” or “rest,” and not on the anguish of death and judgment. It is
about peaceful acceptance and release, and the music is serene and
comforting.

The Sanctuary Choir will perform the version of the work with chamber
orchestra and organ, with Jamie Emerson at the organ.

Admission is free. A love offering will be taken and donated to the urban
ministry of Trinity Lutheran, Building Hope in the City. Doors will open 45
minutes prior to the Concert.
