Near West Theatre Opens Rarely Performed "Candide"=20

Near West Theatre continues its 26th Season with Candide, set to a =
fabulous Leonard Bernstein score, on May 7. The show runs through May =
23. The performance on Saturday, May 8, is sold out.

Everyone is invited to The Best of All Possible Opening Nights party on =
Friday, May 7. Tickets are $25 and include hearty hors d'oeuvres, soda =
and beer, dancing and the performance. Doors open at 5:30. The =
performance starts at 7:30.

An audacious, satirical romp (in the style of Monty Python and Benny =
Hill),  the fast-moving adventure-embarked on with Candide and professor =
Pangloss-thoughtfully and humorously examines the abuse of power, the =
folly of optimism, the uselessness of philosophical speculation, the =
hypocrisy of religion and the corrupting power of money.=20

The script has been adapted from Voltaire's Candide,  written in 1759. =
Voltaire was a lifelong champion of the poor and the downtrodden, =
writing against tyranny and religious persecution with unmatched =
audacity. Near West Theatre has produced this rarely performed musical =
with an amazing cast of 37 older teens and adults, including Trinidad =
Rosado Snider, Kevin J. Kelly, and Pat Ciamacco and Kim Koljat (of Tony =
'n Tina's Wedding).

Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday =
matinee starts at 3 p.m.  All tickets are $6 and include general =
admission seating. Parking is free and guarded. Reservations are =
