=20

UA Professor of Theater Susan Speers is directing this production of The
Trojan Women, with Cleveland actress Tina Tompkins playing the role of
Hecuba. =20

=20

The Trojan Women explores of the ravages of the Trojan War and its
victims: primarily women who suffered a loss of identity in the context
of a devastated city and who faced a future of impending slavery and the
obliteration of hope. The play examines human survival in the midst of
extreme desolation.=20

=20

Hecuba, queen of fallen Troy, leads this ensemble of women in their
passionate, feminist condemnation of war and its atrocities. The widowed
Andromache, the deranged Cassandra, and even the beautiful Helen, who
was blamed as a cause of the war, are all victims, in different ways, of
the terrible aggression between the Greeks and the Trojans.

=20

Ellen McLaughlin's adaptation of Euripides', The Trojan Women, is a work
that is empowered with a feminist point of view, as it deals with the
plight of women in classical times from a modern perspective. The
production has been performed off-Broadway at the Classic Stage Company
in New York. Each time, the cast consisted of immigrants from the former
Yugoslavia and Albania and was performed in a combination of three
languages.=20
