                                =20
During World War II, women at home lifted each other's spirits by =
gathering to knit for the soldiers on the battlefield. They gathered to =
stitch and bitch. Now, sixty years later knitting is again in vogue. =
Breaking away from the old stereotypes, knitting has moved into the =
lives of celebrities, female inmates, entrepreneurs, teachers, =
journalists, and real women alike.
According to local author and lifelong knitter Afi-Odelia Scruggs, =
although they all share a common practice, no two stories are the same. =
In her newly published book
Beyond Stitch and Bitch: Reflections on Knitting and Life (ISBN =
1-58270-103-2, April 2004, Beyond Words), she offers a warm look at the =
spiritual, social, and emotional experiences that can shape, or be =
shaped by, the handiwork. The book is available at local bookstores and =
at yarn shops.=20
Though one person might knit to relax, and another to create beautiful =
gifts, Scruggs ultimately shares the common secret known worldwide by =
lovers of any craft-that far more is gained from the activity of =
creating something than just the creation itself.
Scruggs shows how knitting bridges the gaps of culture and race, as well =
as how the craft helps people redeem their lives. For example, readers =
go to the craft circle at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, =
Ohio, where inmates practice redemptive justice by turning out blankets =
and sweaters for charity.=20
All this in a book small enough to fit in a knitting bag, with essays =
short enough to read between rows of knitting - or any other hobby the =
reader may enjoy.=20
"I've been knitting since I was about 8 or 9 - almost 40 years," Scruggs =
said. "I didn't want to write another collection of patterns, though. =
Instead, I wanted to explore the thoughts that come when we lose =
ourselves in our work."
She has, however, included four patterns that were inspired by the =
circumstances and situations explored in the essays. One of her =
favorites is the I-cord Lariat Necklace, an innovative item of knitted =
jewelry.
"This piece was inspired by all the beautiful yarns that have appeared =
within the last few years," she explained. "The necklace is easy enough =
for a beginner and quick enough to make for a fast gift."
