The Beck Center for the Arts

Presents

The new 'hit' musical

Reefer Madness

=20

=20

Cleveland, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts and Artistic Director
Scott Spence offer up Reefer Madness as this season's final Studio
Theater production. Opening Friday, May 21 and running through June 20,
Reefer Madness is a "cross between "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Rocky
Horror Show," says the New York Times.

Written by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, Reefer Madness, like its kin,
Little Shop of Horrors, takes its cue from the 1936 propaganda film of
the same name, which warned that marijuana should be considered public
enemy No. 1 - "a violent narcotic" leading to "incurable insanity." To
prove its point, the film traces the decline of two fresh-faced kids
after smoking marijuana: one puff and both are hooked, descending into
lasciviousness, bad grades, and erratic driving. Meant to be a
cautionary tale, the film was screened in high schools until the 1970s
when it was considered a "midnight movie" cult classic. And Kevin
Murphy and Dan Studney put music to it! =20

Beck's production of Reefer Madness will be the inaugural U.S.
production, coming after the Los Angeles premiere and subsequent Off
Broadway run. Director Scott Spence exclaims, "Murphy and Studney have
concocted one of the most hysterical musicals in recent memory." "I am
happy to be sharing the spotlight with Musical Director Larry Goodpaster
and Choreographer Martin Cespedes."

The cast for Reefer Madness includes Matthew Wright as the Lecturer,
Benji Reid as Jimmy, Betsy Kahl as Mary and Curtis Young in the dual
roles of Jack and Jesus.

The Beck Center's production of Reefer Madness is sponsored by Cox
Communications, Cleveland Scene Magazine and Lakewoodbuzz.com. Show
times are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 p.m. with special
midnight showings on Saturday, June 12 and 19. Tickets are $22 for
adults, $19 for seniors and $15 for students (25 and under with I.D.).
Discounted rates are available for groups. For tickets call
216.521.2540 or visit www.beckcenter.org <http://www.beckcenter.org/> .
The Beck Center is located just 10 minutes west of downtown Cleveland at
17801 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.
