Audience Members Respond to The Fine Arts Association production of
Missionaries:
"My wife and I attended the performance this past Saturday night and we were
both blown away. This ranks as one of the greatest theatrical experiences
of our lives and you are to be commended for your ability to work at such a
distinguished and superior level."
"In addition to its obvious and highly charged theatricality, the music of
the play, exceptionally well-performed both by on-stage and pit performers,
was for me, a revelation."
"It is one musical event I will not forget."
"I do not have the words for it. Stunning is as close as I can get..the
performance and the spirituality-oh, my!"
"I am virtually speechless.my sister and I were both moved beyond belief.
Once again [Fine Arts] has made a significant impact on the consciousness of
Lake County."
"Words hardly convey the emotion felt in that auditorium. There should have
been a standing ovation, but I think the audience was like me, riveted to my
chair at the end."
".all the people standing around in the lobby after the performance [were]
still talking. Then walking out to my car and more people standing around
at their cars talking. You don't often see that at a performance, and there
aren't many live theater performances that bring me to tears - but
Missionaries did."

The Fine Arts Association
38660 Mentor Avenue,Willoughby
presents the Ohio Premiere of
Missionaries
by multiple Tony Award nominee Elizabeth Swados

Missionaries is the story of the lives, work and eventual murders of Dorothy
Kazel, Jean Donovan, Ita Ford, Maura Clarke and Archbishop Oscar Romero in
El Salvador in 1980, at the height of the oppression and victimization of
the Salvadoran people by a ruthless military dictatorship. The production
recounts their heroism and service through compositions that meld liturgical
music and Latin rhythms. The poignant and often disturbing words spoken in
Missionaries are those of the people themselves, taken from letters, diaries
and Archbishop Romero's sermons.
The story of Missionaries has direct ties to the greater Cleveland
community. Jean Donovan received a Masters degree from Case Western Reserve
University and was employed as an accountant by Cleveland firm Arthur
Andersen after earning her degree. Her volunteer work in the Cleveland
Diocese Youth Ministry led to her decision to enter missionary work in El
Salvador in 1979. Sister Dorothy Kazel joined the Ursuline Sisters in
Cleveland in 1960 where she taught for seven years. In 1974, she joined the
Cleveland diocesan mission team to El Salvador where she served until her
death in 1980. Understandably, the lives and deaths of these women had an
enormous impact on the greater Cleveland community that is still evident
today.(Rated Adult)
