for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf =20

by Ntozake Shange Sept. 17 - Oct. 17, 2004 (Jelliffe Theatre) =20

Directed by Terrence Spivey

Shange's landmark play was a breakthrough portrayal of the =
African-American female experience. Both a joyous celebration of a =
unique culture and a wrenchingly real portrait of the struggle. From its =
conception in California in 1974 to its highly acclaimed critical =
success at Joseph Papp's Public Theater and on Broadway, the Obie =
Award-winning for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the =
rainbow is enuf has excited, inspired, and transformed audiences all =
over the country. =20

"Extraordinary and wonderful...The writing flies into the air like dark =
shallows...Ntozake Shange writes with such exquisite care and beauty =
that anyone can relate to her message." The New York Times

Yellowman=20

by Dael Orlandersmith (Ohio Premier) Nov. 5 - Nov. 28, 2004 =
(Arena Theatre)

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2002, Yellowman is an edgy and =
provocative exploration of racism within the Black community. Alma, a =
dark-skinned African-American woman, and her childhood friend Eugene, a =
light-skinned African-American man, have been life-long friends-yet when =
their friendship turns to love, the different colors of their skin raise =
obstacles that become insurmountable. Orlandersmith's language is =
lyrical and explosive,=20

exposing both harsh realities and tender yearnings. Though Orlandersmith =
focuses her laser-like attention on this internalized prejudice, the =
play also explores how easily we=20

=20

become what we most dislike about our parents, and the pain that arises =
when our bodies do not match our desires.

"A landmark in theater history..Enthralling..Mind-altering." The New =
York Times

=20

"One of the most gripping, instructive, transforming hours in =
contemporary theater."=20

Johnny Taylor Is Gone (2004 ArenaFest Selection) (World Premier) =20
by Gregory Carr Jan. 28, 2005 - Feb. 27, 2005 (Arena Theatre)

Join Karamu during Black History month, as we celebrate not a political =
or historical figure, but a singing legend, singer Johnny Taylor. Hear =
the sounds of his classic hits in this comedy/drama written by St. Louis =
native, Gregory Carr, a young playwright on the rise. Johnny Taylor Is =
Gone was one of the audience favorites during the 2004 R. Joyce Whitley =
ArenaFest Festival of New Plays in April. We are proud to have it aboard =
in the 2004/2005 season. It deals with generational clashes that are so =
timely and important in this day and age. Particularly, with music. Old =
school verses new school. Blues verses hip hop.=20

Will Strong, the owner of The Golden Zodiac Lounge is a die hard "Old =
School" member and refuses to let any hip hop or contemporary R&B be =
played on the jukebox in his bar. He is joined by his friend Owen Pace =
and his bartender, Annie Upchurch who runs the bar with him. Bud Miller, =
Anthony 'Bro' Mann, Bette Black and Wanda Fields complete the bar =
"family." Jiggy Gardener, a young hip-hop impresario wants to buy The =
Golden Zodiac Lounge.=20

13th Annual R. Joyce Whitley ArenaFest Festival of New Plays=20
March 7- March 18, 2005 (Arena Theatre)

Brutal Imagination by Cornelious Eady (Midwest Premier)
April 1 - April 24, 2005 (Arena Theatre)

In 1994 in Union, South Carolina, Susan Smith strapped her two children =
into their car seats and rolled her car into a lake. She told police a =
black man had carjacked her 1990 Mazda Protege with her two sons, =
Michael, age 3, and Alexander, age 14 months, still in the car. An =
intense nationwide search for the children and their abductor followed. =
After nine days of fooling the world, she confessed to her crime.=20

Based on Cornelius Eady's stunning poetry (His book of poetry was a =
finalist for the 2001 National Book Award), Brutal Imagination is a =
powerful new theatrical piece inspired by the tragic events of the Susan =
Smith case. What happens when the imaginary African American man she =
invented to cover up the murder of her children comes to life to tell =
his side of the story?

Cleveland native, Karamu alum and legend to the dance world in this =
World Premier. After research and interviews with Ms. Johnson, Broadway =
and regional theatre legendary Director/ choreographer Dianne McIntyre =
and CCDT Artistic Director/dancer Michael Metcalf brings her compelling =
story to life in this dance-driven drama with the use of multi-media, =
narration and of course.dance.

2004/2005 Youth Theatre Season
Encore of last year's Youth Theatre hit Babies Having Babies=20
by Kathryn Montgomery & Jeffrey Auerbach Sept. 18, 2004 - Oct. =
3, 2004

Babies Having Babies, is a frank, sensitive, humorous script, about =
young women facing the prospect of an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy. It =
deals with honesty, openness and appreciation of the pressures young =
women are expected to cope with, frequently on their own, with little or =
no guidance from elders, and with little understanding, compassion or =
thoughtfulness from their peers. The actors portray real people, each =
one with her own aspirations and plans for the future, a future which =
may or may not be dimmed by an unplanned pregnancy. =20

Christmas holiday treat will be "The Hobbit" Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien =

by Patricia Gray Dec. 11, 2004-Dec. 19, 2004/Jan. 8, 2005-Jan. 9, 2005

Before "The Lord of the Rings" there was "The Hobbit." Bilbo, one of the =
most conservative of all Hobbits, is asked to leave his large, roomy and =
very dry home in the ground in order to set off as chief robber in an =
attempt to recover an important treasure. It's the last thing that any =
sensitive Hobbit would want to do, but great benefit eventually =
results-not only for Bilbo but for all of the Hobbits who inhabit Middle =
Earth-and the hearts of those children and adults who continue to enjoy =
this kind of magic
