North Coast Men’s Chorus Lifts Its Voices With Pride & Joy

CLEVELAND - The North Coast Men’s Chorus concludes its 2003 –2004 Season with two performances of “Pride & Joy” on June 19 at 8:00 PM and June 20 at 3:00 PM, capping off the Cleveland Pride Festival Weekend. Both performances will be at Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University.

As approximately 75 men take the stage, the Chorus will make the boldest statements in support of equal rights for the GLBT community in its 16-year history. The show will touch on the issues of gay marriage, hate crime, prejudice and bigotry with rousing anthems of Gay Pride and songs calling for equality and social justice, as well as a moving tribute to one of its members who recently lost his battle with AIDS. But the men will also celebrate the achievements of the gay rights movement with over-the-top dance numbers and comedy routines.

Richard Cole, Music Director of the Chorus believes that “this is undoubtedly the most important and powerful program we’ve conceived since I’ve been with the Chorus. Looking back on this season, it occurs to me that we’ve told quite a story! “ Cole is referring to the progression from controversy surrounding the title for the holiday show, “Sugar Plum Fairies,” to the posters depicting two men kissing for the Spring show, “Only in the Movies.” The current show, “Pride & Joy” brings the imagery to its next step, showing hands, raised in celebration, and wearing wedding bands.

Perhaps the highest profile gay organization in Northeast Ohio, the North Coast Men’s Chorus has grown to over 100 singing members, under the direction of Music Director, Richard Cole. The all volunteer organization, founded in 1988 is a community based musical organization which affirms the gay experience by presenting entertaining, quality performances for diverse audiences; providing a supportive environment for its members; and promoting a positive presence in the gay community and beyond.

Members of the Chorus represent the widest possible diversity, including doctors, lawyers, bankers and service workers of all ages and races. The Chorus’ programming reflects the same level of diversity with singing, dancing, and comedy, through music from around the world. The performances also take the audience through an entire range of emotions. As one audience member noted, “it represents life and its rainbow of experiences.”

Tickets for “Pride & Joy” are currently available on-line at www.ncmchorus.org or by calling 216.556.0590.
