Imagination: A Writers' Workshop and Conference
The Conference and Workshops - July 13 to 18 Mather Mansion, Cleveland
State University
This is a writing conference about strong, imaginative writing, from
minimal to magical realism, from new journalism to science fiction, from
poetry to memoir to the novel to playwriting. It includes classes and
workshops without genre bias or boundaries, courses about distinctive
creative writing, period.
Afternoon WORKSHOPS (Wed. through Sun.) are small and each group works in
turn with every workshop leader. Moreover, during the week each student
meets in an individual conference with a second faculty member, carefully
going over his or her work for a second opinion.
Morning CLASSES, LECTURES and DISCUSSIONS address the practice, theory and
politics of writing as well as issues of craft and those techniques weaving
imagination and innovation into some of the best contemporary
writing. Each morning ends with a reading.
Conference lectures, panels and readings are open to all applicants, but
enrollment in each of the workshops is limited. Workshop admission is,
therefore, based on writing samples. We will admit participants as we
receive promising submissions. Consequently, submitting early provides a
measure of advantage.
Colloquium on "The Business of Writing" - July 17
The conference will incorporate a one-day colloquium on the nuts and bolts
of writing for publication. This part of the conference can also be
registered for separately. Experienced editors, publishers and an agent
will discuss the business and politics of publication in the U. S.,
including the logistics of submission; finding a market, an agent, a
publisher; working with editors; financial arrangements; and the economics
of publishing.
