Dear NEOPal Subscribers:
=20
The Department of Polkaland Security heightened the
<http://www.pdxpolka.com/polkaalert.htm> National Polka Alert System to
orange after learning that an arsenal of mass polka-power will be
unleashed on the banks of the Ohio & Erie Canal in downtown Akron on
Saturday, July 17, 2004.=20

Sponsored by KeyBank, the impending "Polka Party" festival at Lock 3
Live! and FirstEnergy Stage is predicted to be the scene of unrestrained
kielbasa and pierogi-eating contests, polka dance competitions, and
all-encompassing roll-out-the-barrel revelry - incited by Grammy
Award-winner Brave Combo and other bands that will blast polka-sonic
entertainment, from traditional to "new wave" polka.=20

Over the last 25 years, Texas-based Brave Combo has boldly gone where
few bands have gone before, amassing a potent cache of descriptive
musical pegs. The band's multitude of musical styles and flavors
includes contemporary polka, hot jazz, Tex-Mex, zyedeco, blues, Latin,
acid rock, surf rock, and of course, the twist, cha-cha-cha, hokey
pokey, and the chicken dance.=20

With that in mind, it is rumored that Akron will be the site of the
World's Largest Chicken Dance, considering hundreds of polkateers will
flock to Lock 3 Live! and FirstEnergy Stage for this polka-sonic event.
Festival attendees armed with accordions will gain free admission, and
notorious emcees Big Chuck and Little John will lead the
accordion-toting polka partiers in a resounding play-along segment,
making this fest the "Night of a Thousand Accordions."=20

Brave Combo, Bob Kravos & The Boys In The Band, the Eddie Rodick
Orchestra, The Joe Fedorchak Orchestra, Tower City Drive, and Majestic
Sound will fuel the polka-mania with even more live entertainment.
Ethnic foods and baked goods will supplement the usual festival fare.

Over the last 25 years, Denton, Texas-based Brave Combo has collected a
dizzying array of descriptive musical pegs and earned a Grammy Award
along the way. Their repertoire ranges from "new wave" polka, cha-cha
Latin spice, zyedeco and Tex-Mex to hot jazz, rhythm and blues, rock 'n
roll and klezmer surf rock. Brave Combo's recorded version of "The Happy
Wanderer" is featured in the new film, "Envy," staring Ben Stiller and
Christopher Walken.

As great-nephew of polka king Frank Yankovic, who popularized
"Cleveland-Style polka music", Bob Kravos strives to keep the heritage
and tradition of polka alive. Kravos and the Boys in the Band favor
Slovenian-style polka, country, pop, swing and rock.
=20
The Eddie Rodick Orchestra boasts a blend of Cleveland-Style polkas and
pop favorites. Voted 2003 Musician of the Year by the National
Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame, Rodick and his band have recorded
six albums to date.=20

The Joe Fedorchak Orchestra incorporates all facets of Slovenian
cultural heritage and the Cleveland-Style polka music into their
recordings and performances. Elected for Lifetime Achievement by the
National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame, the band has recorded five
albums

Led by veteran polka performer Ed Potoniec, Tower City Drive serves up a
different flavor of polka music. It's not Eastern-Style, it's not
Chicago-Style, and it's definitely not Cleveland-Style. Rather, it's a
potent polka potion concocted from their original musical philosophy.

Majestic Sound plays the music of today and yesterday, cranking out
Motown oldies, classic rock, country, light jazz, and of course, polka
dance music.

The Polka Fest runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 17 at Lock
3 Live! Park and FirstEnergy Stage on Main Street in downtown Akron,
located next to the Akron Civic Theatre. A $10 admission charge to the
festival includes all concerts and entertainment associated with this
event, with the exclusion of inflatable rides for children, where tokens
will be sold. Admission to the festival is free for children under 48
inches. If you bring a canned food item to Lock 3 park to benefit the
Akron/Canton Food Bank, you can buy one ticket at full price and get the
second ticket for half price.=20

Cash-only tickets are sold at the Lock 3 Live! gates 30 minutes before
show time. For advance tickets, call the Akron Civic Theatre Box Office
at 330.253.2488 between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday.
Tickets are also available at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall Ticket
Office at 330.972.7570, or through Ticketmaster Centers or
Charge-By-Phone at 330.945.9400.=20

NOTE: Due to popular demand, WKSU's Homegrown Saturday Mornin' at Lock 3
Live! has been expanded this season. Homegrown provides the perfect
outdoor setting in which to shop, experience and enjoy, every Saturday
(except July 3) between 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. When the Homegrown vendors
close shop at 2 p.m., folks can stick around town or come back later for
the festival.
