North Coast Men’s Chorus’ First International Appearance

CLEVELAND – On the heels of its most successful season ever, the North Coast Men’s Chorus will make its international debut, appearing before 5,000 if its peers at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA) VIIe Festival International in Montreal, Canada on July 19th. The quadrennial Festival will draw over 164 choruses from the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Australia, and the Republic of South Africa.

Under the leadership of Music Director, Richard Cole, more than 50 of the gentlemen, who dazzled Cleveland audiences in its most recent program, “Pride & Joy,” will be traveling to Montreal to perform a condensed version of the critically acclaimed show.

“Over the past 10 or 15 years, I’ve heard and studied a lot of these choruses,” said Cole. “Many of them boast much larger membership numbers, and have budgets that are staggering in comparison with ours, but I have complete confidence that our guys will hold their own against the best of them, and do Cleveland proud!”

The Chorus’ set will touch on the issues of gay marriage, prejudice and bigotry with rousing anthems of Gay Pride and songs calling for equality and social justice. The men will also celebrate the achievements of the gay rights movement with two over-the-top dance numbers.

It has been a longstanding policy of the NCMC that all of its members ought to be able to participate fully in Chorus activities, regardless of their financial situations. NCMC’s Executive Board established the Neil P. Giewont Scholarship Fund as a living tribute to one of its members who served as Treasurer and as a Trustee of GALA. Mr. Giewont recently lost his long battle with AIDS. Mr. Cole remarked that “Neil was a dear friend, and I think he’d be delighted to know that, thanks to this fund, eight of our guys who otherwise would not be able to go to Montreal will be there as proud participants.”

The eight-day Festival begins on July 17. Further information about GALA and the Festival can be found at www.galachoruses.org.

Perhaps the highest profile gay organization in Northeast Ohio, the North Coast Men’s Chorus has grown to over 100 singing members, under the direction of Music Director, Richard Cole. The all volunteer organization, founded in 1988 is a community based musical organization which affirms the gay experience by presenting entertaining, quality performances for diverse audiences; providing a supportive environment for its members; and promoting a positive presence in the gay community and beyond.

Members of the Chorus represent the widest possible diversity, including doctors, lawyers, bankers and service workers of all ages and races. The Chorus’ programming reflects the same level of diversity with singing, dancing, and comedy, through music from around the world. The performances also take the audience through an entire range of emotions. As one audience member noted, “it represents life and its rainbow of experiences.”

Subscriptions for the North Coast Men’s Chorus 2004-2005 Season are currently available on-line at www.ncmchorus.org or by calling 216.556.0590.
