Douglass, The Fight Against Slavery on Sunday evening, August 1 at 7:00PM
in the theater of Oscar Ritchie Hall on the campus of Kent State University,=

Kent, OH. The performance will be the opening event of a special workshop,=20=
=E2=80=9C
Approaches to Black Drama for Middle and High School Teachers.=E2=80=9D The=20=
workshop is=20
funded in part by a generous grant from the Ohio Humanities Council, a state=
=20
agency.

The play, an original work by Actors=E2=80=99 Summit=E2=80=99s artistic dire=
ctor, Neil=20
Thackaberry, was first performed during the 2001-2002 season. The revival fe=
atures=20
the original cast of Mark Gates as Frederick Douglass, and Neil Thackaberry=20=
as=20
John Brown.

The Play=20
The play focuses on the friendship between Frederick Douglass and John Brown=
.=20
The two were close friends for the twelve years leading up to the attack on=20
Harper=E2=80=99s Ferry in 1859. Much of the play uses the words of the two h=
istorical=20
figures arranged in dialogue form. The story begins with their first meeting=
 in=20
Springfield, Massachusettes in 1847 and ends with John Brown=E2=80=99s execu=
tion=20
following the Harpers Ferry raid.=20

The play will also be available on tour throughout the 2004 =E2=80=93 2005 t=
heater=20
season.

The performance is open to the public. General admission tickets will be=20
available at the door for $5 per person.=20
