NEW CLASS FOR DIRECTORS
STAGING ORIGINAL WORKS

The Geauga Lyric Theater Guild is sponsoring a new class intended to help
community, educator, and student theater directors develop originally
scripted works for stage. The New Play Development class has evolved from
GLTG's sponsorship of a playwriting contest that offers playwrights in
Geauga, Ashtabula, and Lake counties the annual opportunity to compete for
a fully staged production of an original script. The GLTG Original Script
contest is now in its third year.
The theater has been offering a Performance Writing class for playwrights
since 2000. With the addition of its New Play Development class, students
in the GLTG's educational program will now have the opportunity to work on
every aspect of new script creation, development, and production.
The two primary teachers of the New Play Development class are
actor/director Jim Kisicki, who recently directed Neil Simon's Last of the
Red Hot Lovers on the Geauga Theater stage and Joanne Durante, whose
musical Trees of Hope was produced by GLTG earlier this year.
According to Kisicki, the class will us a cross-disciplinary approach with
guest artists representing each of the major theater disciplines. Invited
guest artists include playwright Laurel Gans, GLTG producer Lauren Gare,
stage manager John Poucher, scenic designer Ray Beech, lighting designer
Tom Siko, costume designer Allison Herman, and sound designer Skip Kelly.
Gans script, "A Tale of Two Delis," which had its initial reading at
Dobama Theatre last year as part of that theater's educational program,
will be the play analyzed and developed.
The GLTG class will meet on Mondays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from
September 13 through November 29. A performance class, which will be open
to the general public, will include a rehearsed script-in-hand reading
and displays of set and costume designs, and will be presented at the
Geauga Theater on Chardon Square at 7 p.m. on November 22.
The cost of the class is $50.00 per person, and it is recommended for ages
16 through adult. To register, send a check made out to GLTG to P.O. Box
834, Chardon, Oh 44024. For more information, please contact jfd at nccw.net
or call Joanne Durante at 440-729.6481.
