Hudson Players to Celebrate 60th Anniversary Season

HUDSON, OH July 29, 2004 – The Hudson Players, Hudson’s theater tradition,
will be celebrating their 60th anniversary during their upcoming 2004-05
theater season.

“We’re very proud to have been a part of Hudson for such a long time and to
have established one of the longer running theater traditions in the area,”
said Michelle Dolciato, Hudson Players President. “It’s amazing to think
back on all the great shows that have been performed and all the wonderful
people that have been involved.”

During the groups sixty season run, they have performed at the Hudson Town
Hall, The Old Church On the Green in Hudson, the GAR Hall in Peninsula,
Hudson High School, and at the group's current home, The Barlow Community
Center on Oviatt St. in Hudson.

It really is an amazing feat by a great theater troupe,” says Gary Maher,
Board Member and 25-year member. “While there are certainly some theaters in
the area that have been around longer, we are definitely part of an elite
group. We have been well supported by the community and have always tried to
give that support back in our shows, our support for other arts
organizations, our efforts to improve our performance environment and our
support for Hudson businesses.”

An argument can be made that the group is actually older then the 60 seasons
to be celebrated. An earlier version of the Hudson Players Guild was
organized in the late twenties by the Robert Izants, Spencer Corletts,
Harold Bells and the Neal Grays. This Hudson Players Guild performed many
times during the twenties at the Western Reserve Academy’s Chapel (when it
still had a stage) to benefit the independent Hudson Primary School. That
original group ended its existence sometime in the late thirties. Thus the
Hudson Players Guild has actually been around more than 80 years, but
details of the original organization are hard to come by. The current Hudson
Players organization has been in continuous operation since 1944, when it
was founded by five Hudsonites sitting around a table at Saywells (also a
great Hudson tradition), Thus the group will celebrate its 60th consecutive
theater season this year.

Plans are underway for various celebrations but the Hudson Players Guild, as
always, welcomes involvement of anyone interested in helping out. Financial
support is also appreciated with the group’s annual membership drive kicking
off shortly. Anyone wishing to make a donation can either call 330-655-8522
or send their donation to: The Hudson Players, PO Box 2159, Hudson, OH
44236. All donors will be recognized in the 60th anniversary program unless
requested otherwise. As a 501C3 organization recognized by the State of
Ohio, all donations made to the Hudson Players are tax deductible.

”Right now were planning the celebration events and looking for businesses
or organizations that would like to sponsor our 60th season,” said Maher.
“We are also fortunate that due to our 60th anniversary this year, the Ohio
Community Theater Association has chosen us as hosts for its Northeast
Regional Theater Festival to be held in July of 2005. It’s a showcase of all
the great theaters in the area with excerpts from their best shows. It’s a
great honor and we’re excited to be hosts.”

The Hudson Players plan to celebrate all year with special recognition at
all of their productions, special events and an anniversary
party/celebration.

The Hudson Players are always seeking new volunteers. They are currently
seeking anyone interested in joining their publicity and fundraising
committees, along with anyone who might be interested in serving on an
advisory board for the community theater troupe. For further information
please call 330-655-8522 or visit the Hudson Players website at
www.hudsonplayers.com.

The Hudson Players are one of the areas longest running community theaters
and are members of the Hudson Chamber of Commerce, The Ohio Community
Theatre Association and the American Association of Community Theater.
