The Beck Center for the Arts

Presents

Portraits of Romania

August 23- September 5

=20

Cleveland, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts is proud to present
Portraits of Romania, an exhibit of Romanian Artists from the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, featuring paintings by Theodore Pallady (a
contemporary of Matisse) and photographs by Louis Martin. Incooporation
with St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, this exhibit will be on
display from August 23 through September 5 in the main building of the
Beck Center campus in Lakewood. =20

Romanian painter Pallady is ranked as one of the most important artists
in Europe, contributing to different trends and schools of art. As a
contemporary of Matisse, he is prominently known for his paintings
depicting landscapes of Romania and abroad, nudes, still-lifes,
flowers, and interiors. Expressive drawings and coloring dominate his
paintings.

Romanian-American photographer, Louis Martin, traveled to Romania many
times over a 35 year period taking over 3,000 photographs to document
everyday life in Romania and of life behind the Iron Curtain. The
photographs show Romanians from the time of the Geto-Dacian, an
Indo-European people, to the present era. Louis Martin says, "These
photographs show the faces of Romania, and facets of the country that
are seldom publicized in tourist guides." Cleveland's own Louis Martin
has exhibited at Purdue University, Kent State University, and Wooster
College. He has also won many prizes from the Chicago Photographic
Convention, the Cleveland Museum of Art's May Show, the Annual Photo
Show of the Jewish Community Center, and the International Photo Contest
sponsored by Scripps Howard Newspapers.

This exhibit is part of a vast collection from the Romanian Ethnic Art
Museum located on the second floor of St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox
Cathedral in Cleveland. The museum has been in existence for almost 40
years and features regional costumes, pottery, photographs, religious
objects of the Orthodox Cathedral and more. This collection includes 48
paintings of Theodore Pallady and over 30 paintings by other Romanian
artists of the 20th century including Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodore Aman,
and Stephan Luchian. "The Art Collection of St. Mary's is the most
extensive outside of Romania," says former Cleveland Press newspaperman
Theodore Andrica.=20

Portraits of Romania is free and open to the public Mondays - Saturdays
from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Sundays 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. from August
23 through September 5 in the main campus building. Join us for an
opening reception on Thursday, August 26th from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. in
