EL CAPITAN is being presented in celebration of the “March King’s” 150th birthday. The most successful of Sousa’s 14 operettas, EL CAPITAN was written in 1896 for the famous comedian De Wolf Hopper and his Comic Opera Co. Sousa’s rousing score contains the famous “El Capitan March.” Charles Klein’s satirical libretto is set in Peru and rivals Gilbert and Sullivan’s best efforts. The plot follows the exploits of El Capitan who was the leader of a rebel band determined to overthrow Don Medigua, the viceroy of Peru. Medigua disguises himself as El Capitan and leads the insurgents, providing a series of comical mistaken identities. The Canton Comic Opera Company’s production of EL CAPITAN will mark the first production of the original version of this operetta since 1924.

The Canton Comic Opera Company’s 2004-2005 season will continue with semi-staged concert productions of THE PRINCE OF PILSEN (1903) by Gustav Luders and Frank Pixley in April, 2005 and Sigmund Romberg’s THE DESERT SONG (1926) in July, 2005.

The Canton Comic Opera Company is a newly formed, non-profit, semi-professional theatre company, based in Canton, Ohio, dedicated to the preservation and performance of American operettas. Founded and incorporated in 2003 by executive director, Mr. Joseph N. Rubin, the Canton Comic Opera Company is a volunteer organization providing talented singers and musicians in the Northeastern Ohio community with the opportunity to perform in operetta productions. The Canton Comic Opera Company is the only theatre company in the world dedicated solely to the performance of historic American operettas.
