Dear NEOhioPal Subscriber ~

If not for the Ohio & Erie Canal, Akron would not exist today. The canal
opened up Ohio's frontier settlement, providing settlers with a reliable
form of transportation to ship products. Consequently, the city of Akron
sprang up around Lock 1 of the canal at Main and Exchange Streets. And
the rest, as they say, is history ....

On Saturday, September 4, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Canal Days
Celebration at Lock 3 Live! park will commemorate the history and
preservation of the Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor. Just two locks down from
Akron's pivotal Lock 1 in downtown Akron, Lock 3 Live! park is located
on Main Street, next to the Akron Civic Theatre.=20

Festival attendees are invited to breathe in the fresh air and take in
Akron's proud past along downtown's picturesque waterway. A marble
exhibit, pioneer craft activities, and a glass blowing demonstration are
among the scheduled activities that will bring Akron's past to life,
with an emphasis on the city's historic manufacture of products.

In addition to tours of the Ohio Canal -conducted by staff and
volunteers of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park - there will be
inflatable "rides" for kids, including a rock climbing wall, a Giraffe
Moon Walk, and a Bungee Trampoline.=20

Featured festival foods include burgers, fries and handmade ice-cream
cones from Menches Brothers; chicken wings, tacos and taco salad, and
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from Lisa's Place; German style
sausage sandwiches, and cabbage and noodles from Yost Concessions;
pulled pork and rib sandwiches from Arnold's Ribs, and various items
from Mustard Seed Market.

Fitting to the festival theme, live musical entertainment spotlights
folk favorites The Kingston Trio, Glenn Yarbrough & The Folk Reunion,
Weavermania, Lee Murdock, and Brian Henke.
