October 4-October 16, 2004

AKRON, OH –The University of Akron’s Theatre Program will host the New World Performance Laboratory, Northeast Ohio’s own world-class alternative theatre company, from October 4 through October 16, 2004. NWPL will premiere two performances at UA as well as conduct master classes for University students, present several lecture/demonstrations, and organize a symposium for area theatre artists. New World Performance Lab presents Deathwatch by Jean Genet, one of the 20th century’s most controversial and important playwrights. NWPL’s production is directed by UA Theatre Professor and NWPL artistic director, James Slowiak and features Jairo Cuesta, a Colombian actor and co-director of the company, as well as NWPL apprentices Christopher Buck and Justin Hale. Deathwatch is Genet's first play, rewritten shortly before his death in 1986. It tells the story of three prisoners locked in a sacrificial rite of passage from division to wholeness. The play promises to be an intimate and intense experience that demonstrates the company's unique physical acting style, which has won them acclaim on four continents. Performances are in the Daum Theatre on UA’s campus and seating will be limited. Performance dates and times are: October 7, 8, 9, 15, 16 at 8pm and October 10 at 7pm. Tickets are $10 general admission. For reservations call: 330-867-3299.

In repertory with Deathwatch will be Stairway to Paradise, A Cabaret Soul Journey, featuring NWPL apprentice Megan Elk singing from the songbooks of Arlen, Berlin, Gershwin and Weil. Megan weaves story and song in a way that links the sacred to the profane, the soul to the body, the Jewish experience to American popular song. Stairway to Paradise is a musical journey backward, inward, and finally forward. With percussionist Ronald Martin and directed by James Slowiak. Performances are in the Daum Theatre on UA’s campus and seating will be limited. Performance dates and times are: October 9, 16 at 10:30pm; October 10 at 2pm; October 14 at 8pm.
