Actors' Summit Theater presents=20
Dorothy and Reuben Silver=20
in Laughter in 3 Languages=20
           =20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater announces the opening of Laughter in 3 Langua=
ges, a=20
delightful collection of vignettes about the common immigrant experience,=20
assembled and performed by Dorothy and Reuben Silver for eight performances=20
beginning Oct. 7 at its theater at 86 Owen Brown Street in downtown Hudson.
=20
The Show
Dorothy and Reuben Silver drew on a rich legacy of work by American Jewish=20
writers, mainly humorists, to create Laughter in 3 Languages, a collection o=
f=20
stories that recount the joys and sorrows of learning new customs, a new=20
language and all the other mysteries of a new land. The immigrants of the ta=
les are=20
Jewish, but the humor and pathos that unfold demonstrate the universality of=
=20
the immigrant experience. The vignettes are performed simultaneously in Engl=
ish=20
and Yiddish, so the material is easy to understand as it entertains.=20
Occasionally, the Silvers will employ =E2=80=9CYinglish,=E2=80=9D that immig=
rant blend of the mother=20
tongue and English. =E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s fun and it works,=E2=80=9D Dorothy=
 says of the presentation,=20
to which Reuben adds, =E2=80=9CMost American Jews today don=E2=80=99t unders=
tand Yiddish,=20
but they love it.=E2=80=9D So, the Silvers are finding, do non-Jewish audien=
ces. When=20
first performed in 2002 -- as a benefit for the Ensemble Theatre in Clevelan=
d --=20
Laughter in 3 Languages played to four sell-out crowds. The Actors=E2=80=99=20=
Summit=20
production comes in the second month of a yearlong celebration of the 350th=20
anniversary of the arrival of the first permanent Jewish settlers in New Ams=
terdam=20
(Sept. 12, 1654) and, coincidentally, 150 years after the arrival of the=20
first Jewish settlers in Akron. In 1865, this latter group, 20 strong, organ=
ized=20
the Akron Hebrew Association, which has been known as Temple Israel since 19=
11.
=20
The Cast
The Silvers are no strangers to Actors=E2=80=99 Summit audiences. Most recen=
tly they=20
were featured -- she as Mistress Quickly and he as Falstaff -- in the April=20
production of Merry Wives of Windsor. Described by one reviewer as Cleveland=
=E2=80=99s=20
reigning theater couple, Reuben and Dorothy have shared their talents locall=
y=20
for nearly 50 years as performers, directors, teachers and administrators.=20
Reuben=E2=80=99s career began as a child actor in Detroit=E2=80=99s Yiddish=20=
theater in 1933, and=20
Yiddish was his first language; he learned English in school. He and Dorothy=
=20
met in 1948 when he saw her in a Tennessee Williams production at Wayne Stat=
e=20
University. They married a year later and have been a dynamic theatrical duo=
=20
ever since. Just a few of their onstage credits together include The Visit,=20
Death of a Salesman and The Gin Game, A Trip to Bountiful, All My Sons, Glas=
s=20
Menagerie and The Dybbuk.
=20

Laughter in 3 Languages opens with a preview performance at 8 p.m. Thursday,=
