Summer of ’42 Makes Cleveland Debut At Kalliope Stage

October 1.

Paul F. Gurgol Directs New York Talents Jodi Brinkman and Jay Strauss

Who Star With Cleveland’s Alex Wyse

The new musical version of SUMMER OF ’42, will make its Cleveland debut October 1 through November 7 at Kalliope Stage at Cedar & Lee in Cleveland Heights. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2pm. There will be a gala “champagne” benefit performance tonight, September 30, to kick off Kalliope’s second season. Limited tickets by calling 216 321 0870.

PAUL F. GURGOL, Kalliope’s award-winning artistic director, directs the musical based on the 1971 movie which starred Jennifer O’Neal and Gary Grimes.

JAY STRAUSS, a veteran Broadway performer plays the role of the druggist. His credits include performances with The Metropolitan Opera, the Broadway Centennial BABES IN TOYLAND at the Lincoln Center, and national tours, including PHANTOM. Film and TV credits include: Law & Order: Criminal Intent, David Letterman, and NYPD Blue. In addition, he has collaborated with such theater luminaries as Michael Bennett and Eddie Bracken.

JODI BRINKMAN, playing the role of Dorothy is an up and coming New York actor. She has appeared regionally in productions of FOOTLOOSE and JEKYLL & HYDE, as well as playing the leading role of Sally Bowles in CABARET.

Cleveland’s ALEX WYSE plays the role of Hermie. Alex has appeared in Cleveland productions of LORD OF THE FLIES and INTO THE WOODS, and in CAROUSEL at Kalliope last season.

CHRIS POHL plays the role of Pete. He is a recent graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College. He appeared at Kalliope as Jigger in the much-lauded production of CAROUSEL. Mr. Pohl is also a teacher for Kalliope’s classes.

SUMMER OF '42 features an ensemble of exceptional local young performers. Aaron Dore, a junior at Shaker Heights High School, plays Oscy; Dan O'Neil, a junior at Chagrin Falls High School plays Benji; Jamie Finkenthal, a senior at Solon High School, plays Aggie; Elizabeth Kelly, a sophomore theater major at Baldwin-Wallace College plays Miriam; Julie Marx, a junior at Cleveland Heights High, plays Gloria. "I could not have found a more talented ensemble of young performers anywhere in the country," says Artistic Director Paul F. Gurgol.

KRIS COMER is musical director and head of Kalliope education program; set design is by RUSS BORSKI, design teacher at CWRU, and frequent collaborator at many Cleveland theaters; and costume designer is KIM BROWN, who costumed Kalliope’s first season.

According to director, Paul F. Gurgol, "I love the way this incredible music was added to a story that has affected so many people through the movie. And it can do things onstage as a musical that it couldn't do as a movie. The Broadway-style score captures the spirit of the '40s and at the same time creates something completely contemporary and emotionally engaging."

Besides SUMMER OF ’42, Kalliope Stage has announced three other musicals for its second season in 2004-05: THE CHRISTMAS CAROL RAG, a New York send-up of Charles Dickens, Nov. 26-Dec. 19; A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, Stephen Sondheim's tribute to Ingmar Bergman, April 8-May 8; and BABY, about expectant parenthood, June 24-July 31 2005.
