OBERLIN, OHIO -- The venerable British composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle,=20
creator of such works as the monumental lyric tragedy The Mask of Orpheus,=20
will be in residence at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music May 1 -- 10,=20
2005.
Sir Harrison's May residency is the culmination of a year of concerts and=20
master classes by renowned musicians and composers that also includes=20
residencies by pianist Russell Sherman and percussionist Steven Schick, as=20
well as a mini-festival of composer Daniel Pinkham's work.
Here is a calendar listing of guest artists scheduled to appear at Oberlin=20
through December 2004. Please note that this does not include complete=20

Called "one of the truly extraordinary pianists" by The New York Times,=20
Russell Sherman continues to garner accolades from critics and audiences=20
alike for his grace, imagination, and poetry. The 2004-05 season marks his=20
75th birthday and the 60th anniversary of his professional debut in New=20
York at age 15. The division of keyboard studies sponsors his Oberlin=20
residency.

Percussionist Steven Schick has championed contemporary percussion music as =
a performer and teacher for the past 20 years. He has commissioned and=20
premiered more than 100 new works for percussion and has performed these=20
pieces on major concert series such as Lincoln Center's Great Performers=20
and the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Green Umbrella concerts. He has recorded =
many of these works for SONY classical, Wergo, Point, CRT, and Neuma=20
Records. Schick is the percussionist of the Bang on a Can All-Stars. The=20
New Music Division of the Contemporary Music Program sponsors his=20
residency.
