BURN (QUEIMADA!)
Original! Uncut Version!
Italy/France, 1968, Gillo Pontecorvo
Friday, October 22, at 9:30 pm
Saturday, October 23, at 7:00 pm
The late Marlon Brando stars in the director's follow-up to his 1965
masterpiece BATTLE OF ALGIERS - seen here in its
never-released-in-America, original, uncut version! Brando plays Sir
William Walker, a drunken, cynical, British agent provocateur who is
sent to a Caribbean island in the late 1800's to foment a slave revolt
against the European overlords. A few years later he comes back to
crush these same rebels. This visually stunning allegory on colonialism
and capitalism sadly still resonates. New color 35mm print. Cleveland
premiere! Italian with subtitles. 132 min.

Here is the rest of the week starting tonight:

THERE WAS A FATHER
CHICHI ARIKI
Japan, 1942, Yasujiro Ozu
Thursday, October 21, at 7:00 pm
Affecting Ozu classic charts the relationship between a widower and his
beloved son during the course of two decades. Separation makes the
heart grow fonder, and colder. New 35mm print. Subtitles. 88 min.

MY ARCHITECT: A SON'S JOURNEY
USA, 2003, Nathanial Kahn
Thursday, October 21, at 8:50 pm
Sunday, October 24, at 4:00 pm
This Oscar-nominated documentary is a fascinating, moving film by the
son of the legendary architect Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974), as he travels
around the world looking at buildings and talking to people in order to
come to terms with his father's professional triumphs and personal
failings. Kahn was a secretive and elusive man who had three families -
one official and two unofficial. Nate was the product of, you guessed
it, an unofficial one. 35mm. 116 min. www.myarchitectfilm.com

TIME OF THE WOLF
LE TEMPS DU LOUP
France/Austria/Germany, 2003, Michael Haneke
Friday, October 22, at 7:15 pm
Saturday, October 23, at 9:35 pm
Sunday, October 24, at 9:15 pm
Isabelle Huppert stars in the latest horrorshow from the director of THE
PIANO TEACHER, FUNNY GAMES, and CODE UNKNOWN. A post-911 disaster film
devoid of Hollywood special effects and heroes. TIME OF THE WOLF
follows an affluent French woman and her two children as they try to
survive in a post-apocalyptic world with no electricity and drastic
shortages of food and water. Haneke paints a dark, nightmarish portrait
of the barbarism that lurks beneath the fragile surface of
civilization. Cleveland premiere! 35mm. 114 min. www.timeofthewolf.com

THE MUNEKATA SISTERS
MUNEKATA SHIMAI
Japan, 1950, Yasujiro Ozu
Sunday, October 24, at 7:00 pm
This largely-unknown-and-unseen-in-America feature by Ozu was made
between two of his greatest films, LATE SPRING and EARLY SUMMER. A tale
of two sisters - an older, traditional one and a younger, more modern
one - who come into conflict with themselves and their middle-class
family. Subtitles. 16mm. 112 min. Print courtesy of the Japan
Foundation.

Special Event!
Linda Ehrich, CWRU Professor of
Japanese and widely published
film scholar leads post-film discussion!
AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON
SAMMA NO AJI
Japan, 1962, Yasujiro Ozu
Monday, October 25, at 7:00 pm
Ozu's final film is another variation of LATE SPRING widower who
attempts to marry off his only daughter despite her objections, then is
left alone - save for his drinking buddies. This serene, autumnal
masterpiece, sad but also full of humor, was in production when Ozu's
mother died. (The director had lived with her his whole life.) Ozu
himself died a year later. New 35mm color print! 115 min. Tickets
$10, $7 Cinematheque members, CIA students & staff; no passes. This
movie will play again on Sunday, October 31, at 4:00 pm for regular
admission prices and without a post-film discussion.

NEXT WEEK:

THE END OF SUMMER - And the end of our illustrious summer film series by
Ozu!

GOZU - Japanese crazyman Takashi Miike is at it again in this outrageous
new film.

BEFORE SUNRISE - See it one time only and then see BEFORE SUNSET on

LEADBELLY - 1976 Gordon Parks pic that kicks off Rock Hall Leadbelly
fest. Special discussion will follow the screening, Monday, November 1
