JAMES KEELAGHAN
and Hugh MacMillan

Thursday, October 28
8:00 PM

Canadian musician James Keelaghan searches the past for musical inspiration. His most celebrated songs tell the stories of extraordinary events from history through the eyes of ordinary people. In doing so, they turn epic tales into deeply moving pieces that strike a personal chord.

Now, after 8 albums, a JUNO award, 3 JUNO nominations, and a total of 17 years as one of Canada's best-known exports on the folk circuit, Keelaghan mines his own history with his new album Then Again. He reworks 11 of his best-loved tunes, bringing them up to date with the versions he now shares with his audiences on a two month tour of regional Australia.

James continues to win accolades for his songwriting; he just won first place in the folk category of the USA Songwriting competition for the second year in a row. He also earned praise for his tribute to a Canadian songwriting legend with his cover of the 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' on the recent Gordon Lightfoot tribute album Beautiful.

Accompanied on fretless bass by Spirit Of The West's Hugh Macmillan, one of the two main collaborators on James' latest CD Home (Appleseed Records).

BIG LEG EMMA

Friday, October 29
8:00 PM

Big Leg Emma is quickly rising out of the Western New York original music scene, combining a unique blend of influences and instrumentation into a compelling and fresh, new music. You'll find touches of roots-rock, bluegrass, reggae, folk, funk, and country in Emma's happy, new sound.

The "vision" started in 2001, when long-time musical partners Steve Johnson (acoustic guitar / vocals) and Charity Nuse (vocals / mandolin) met up with Amanda Barton (violin / vocals). Amanda, arguably the focal point of BLE's sound, has been playing since she was 8 years old with the family bluegrass band, The Bluegrasshoppers. Another chance meeting brought bassist Dan Warmbrodt into the project, who soon suggested offering the drum position to John McGuire. These two had previously played together; most notably with Djava and Sweet Jane & the Djam. Together they give the band a tight, solid groove. Kevin Rowe, coming from the respected 5 Cubic Feet, later accepted the invitation to join, adding his tasteful, clean electric guitar style.

Big Leg Emma has been very busy in it's brief existence, performing from New York to Tennessee and Ohio to New York City. They were invited to do a small tour with Rusted Root's front Mike Glabicki and played several dates in the North East. BLE has also been widely accepted on the festival circuit, making every stage their own and always leaving a favorable impression. They've appeared with 10,000 Maniacs (who asked Amanda to add her violin to some of their hits), David Grisman, Sam Bush, Allison Brown, Hypnotic Clambake, The Recipe, Commander Cody, Donna The Buffalo, Max Creek, and many more.

Virtually from the beginning, Emma has been constantly asked for recordings. To that end, the band decided that the best and quickest way to fill those requests was to find a nice room, have a party with their friends and fans and record it. The result of that decision is BLE's debut CD "Gramma Don't Like That!". The 14 song disc, featuring mostly Steve's compositions with a few uniquely Emma surprises, has been very well received and the band hopes to enter a "real" studio this winter (2003). Label interest isn't that far off.

Big Leg Emma's fan base grows with every show. Their love for their music; their love of performing their music; "let's have some fun anyway" vibe are just a few of the reasons why. Check out a show for yourself. You'll like it, too. Really. Whether you want to or not. Everybody finds something to like about Big Leg Emma.

Advance discount tickets: $10.00
Day of Show: $12.00

THE BEST OF THE BEATLES:
THE PETE BEST BAND

Experience the sound of early years of the greatest band in the world!

Saturday, October 30
8:00 PM

Forty years ago four lads from Liverpool led the British Invasion which overtook these shores. The Beatles are arguably the most prolific and popular rock group of all time. Before it was John, Paul, George and Ringo, it was John, Paul, George and Pete. The Beatles and many other bands that made up the Mersey Beat got their start in a little club called the Casbah. The Casbah was owned by Mona Best. Her son, Pete became the drummer in 1960 for the Beatles. Best was part of the band when they went from a house favorite to conquering Hamburg. Prior to their big breakthrough and eventually taking over the music world, Best was given notice that he was being replaced by Ringo Starr. Instead of whining about what could have been, Best kept his chin up and had mild success with his own band until he retired in 1968. After 20 years of retirement, Best put together what was supposed to be a one off show and has resumed touring and recording again. The British Invasion has hit the shores
again as the Pete Best Band is touring across the country now playing music of the Mersey Beat era as well as some newer material.
