CLEVELAND INSTITUTE OF ART CINEMATHEQUE
11141 East Boulevard Cleveland, Ohio 44106

Among our films this weekend are two classic films, one from the silent
era and one about an era of lavish wealth and influence. Don't miss
these films directed by Luchino Visconti and F.W. Murnau in new,
restored 35 mm prints!

THE LEOPARD
New, Restored 35mm Print!
IL GATTOPARDO
Italy/France, 1963, Luchino Visconti
Saturday, November 13, at 8:00 pm
Sunday, November 14, at 2:45 pm
This great historical spectacle doubles as one of the most lavish and
splendid movies ever made in scope! Burt Lancaster plays the scion of
an aristocratic, 19th-century Sicilian family living at the time of
Garibaldi and the unification of Italy. Despite his best attempts to
cling to his patrician lifestyle of privilege and influence, he can't
hold back the populist tide of history. Visctonti's sumptuous film is
an elegy for a lost way of life, and for a bygone era of grace, style,
and elegance; its climactic ballroom sequence inspired a similar finale
in RUSSIAN ARK. For years THE LEOPARD was regarded as the "most wanted"
film never released on home video and DVD. Although it is now available
on DVD, you don't want to see it on TV when you have a big-screen
alternative. The new print we will show this weekend is supposed to be
even more beautiful than the restored British print that drew over 500
people to the Cleveland Museum of Art in September, 2003! THE LEOPARD
proved so popular at New York's Film Forum that the theatre is bringing
it back for a whole other engagement later this year. With Alain Delon
and Claudia Cardinale. Music by Nino Rota; cinematography by Giuesppe
Rotunno. Subtitles. 180 min.

THE LAST LAUGH

print of the original German version of this masterpiece, which differs
slightly from the better-known American cut. Live piano accompaniment

THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI
ZATOICHI
Japan, 2003, Takeshi Kitano
Thursday, November 11, at 7:00 pm
Sunday, November 14, at 8:45 pm
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Picture at the 2003 Venice Film
Festival, and the People's Choice Award for Best Film at the 2003
Toronto International Film Festival, Takeshi (FIREWORKS, SONATINE)
Kitano's cartoonish action drama resurrects a Japanese icon -- the
19th-century blind masseur and swordsman Zatoichi -- who was the subject
of 26 feature films and over 100 television episodes made between 1962
and 1989. Kitano's Zatoichi is perhaps faster and more lethal than his
precursor (played by the stalwart Shintaro Katsu); he fights villains
with aplomb in this handsome, funny, bloody movie that even has musical
numbers! Subtitles. 35mm. 116 min. miramax.com/zatoichi/index.html
