PROTEUS
Canada/South Africa, 2003,
John Greyson, Lack Lewis
Thursday, December 2, at 7:00 pm
Sunday, December 5, at 8:50 pm
18th-century South Africa finds two gay lovers (a Dutch sailor and a
Hottentot tribesman) imprisoned for sodomy and sentenced to die in this
melodramatic story based on the records of a 1735 trial. "An epic gay

GOODBYE DRAGON INN
BU SAN
Taiwan, 2003, Tsai Ming-liang
Thursday, December 2, at 9:00 pm
Friday, December 3, at 7:15 pm
Saturday, December 4, at 6:15 pm
Long takes and little dialogue along with an aging movie theatre
spattered with misfits, dreamers, lovers, and loners set the tone for
Tsai Ming-liang's latest film, which critics are already calling a
masterpiece. Set in a rundown, largely empty, soon-to-be-demolished
Taipei movie house showing King Hu's 1966 swordplay classic DRAGON INN,
this minimalist movie is "haunted" by the lonely regulars as they ignore
the movie, cruise the auditorium, or navigate the buildings dank
corridors, and as in any Tsai film, it's raining like hell! Cleveland
premiere! Mandarin with subtitles. 35mm. 81 min. www.wellspring.com

FANNY AND ALEXANDER
FANNY OCH ALEXANDER
Sweden, 1982, Ingmar Bergman
Friday, December 3, at 9:00 pm
Saturday, December 4, at 8:00 pm
A beautiful new 35mm color print of one of the great modern films is
here! Ingmar Bergman's sumptuous family epic is a magnificent summation
of the themes (love and loneliness; dreams and nightmares; reality and
illusion; theatre and cinema) that have preoccupied him throughout his
long career. Set in turn-of-the-century Sweden, the film focuses on a
young brother and sister who must leave the warmth and comfort of their
extended theatrical family for a severe, Spartan existence with their
mother's new husband, a stern, puritanical minister. WInner of four
Oscars, FANNY AND ALEXANDER is many things; a dazzling Christmas
pageant, a harrowing horror film, and a warm-hearted celebration of
friends and family. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 188
min.

FAUST
Germany, 1926, F.W. Murnau
Sunday, December 5, at 7:00 pm
Murnau's last German silent film, made before he moved to Hollywood,
tells the famous story of an elderly man who sells his soul to the Devil
in order to be young again. The fantastic, elaborate imagery evokes
German romantic painters and other European masters, and Mephistopheles
is played by the great Emil Jannings. Live piano accompaniment by
Sebastian Birch. Subtitles. 35mm. Approx. 90 min. www.kino.com

Picture This Workshops - Filmmaker's Program @Cleveland State University

I don't normally plug something without good reason but Cleveland State
University is offering (for a hefty price, but worth it!) film classes
in January and March. I am a bit tired of hearing people complain that
you can't find film classes in Cleveland! Well, here is your opportunity!

Coming in January is your opportunity to take film classes from
experienced instructors. Classes range from hands-on lighting and grip
techniques to learning to use light meters, loading and unloading 16mm
cameras, camera placement, direction, editing, production, and basically
all the stuff you need to become the next Bergman or Spielberg. Spring
workshops start in March. Check it out at www.csuohio.edu/picturethis
-- email them at picturethis at csuohio.edu or call (216) 687-5086.
