TABU
USA, 1931, F.W. Murnau
Thursday, December 9, at 7:00 pm
F.W. Murnau's final film is one of his most beautiful and sensuous. A
tale of forbidden love filmed in the South Seas, the movie follow two
natives - a handsome fisherman and a "sacred" maiden reserved for the
gods (human love for her is taboo) - who defy the island chiefs and run
away together. We will show the original, uncut version of this
masterpiece, printed from the preservation negative that restored all of
the nudity cut out during the prudish 1940's. Academy Award for Best
Cinematography. 35mm. 81 min. www.milestonefilms.com

BRIGHT LEAVES
USA, 2003, Ross McElwee
Thursday, December 9, at 8:40 pm
Saturday, December 11, at 5:00 pm
The life and lore of film diarist Ross (SHERMAN'S MARCH) McElwee's
extended North Carolina family is explored is this funny, reflective new
essay film that was inspired by a 1950 Gary Cooper movie entitled BRIGHT
LEAF, a melodrama about the late 19th century Southern tobacco wars.
According to McElwee's relatives, that movie may have been based on the
life of the filmmaker's great-grandfather, a tobacco tycoon who created
the Bull Durham brand and then lost his empire to the rival Duke clan.
The film has plenty of play room, full of family affairs, the legacy of
tobacco farming, and the hazards of smoking. Fun stuff! Cleveland
premiere. 35mm. 107 min. www.firstrunfeatures.com

INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS
Britain, 2004, Zak Penn
Friday, December 10, at 7:30 pm
Saturday, December 11, at 9:50 pm
Sunday, December 12, at 1:15 pm
While trying to make a documentary about Scotland's Loch Ness monster,
crazed adventurer-filmmaker Werner Herzog (FITZCARRALDO, AQUIRE, WRATH
OF GOD) finds himself burdened with bad ideas imposed by an intrusive
producer and dogged by a film crew shooting a doc about the making of
his movie. This hilarious whatsit - a film-within-a-film-within-a-film
- is a hybrid of weird fact and fiction that has proved to be a major
festival favorite. Cleveland premiere. 35mm 94 min.

the name South Koreans give to their flag. TAE GUK GI is a rousing,
wrenching spectacle, with serious moral underpinnings and parallels to
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. From the director of SHIRI. Cleveland premiere.
Subtitles. 35mm. 140 min. www.sonypictures.com/movies/taegukgi/
Friday's show co-sponsored by National Association of Asian American
