ALMOST PEACEFUL
UN MONDE PRESQUE PAISIBLE
France, 2002, Michel Deville
Saturday, December 18, at 2:15 pm
Sunday, December 19, at 3:55 pm
Jews who survived the Holocaust try to rebuild their lives in 1946 Paris
in this understated, humanistic film by veteran French director Michel
Deville. Set in and around a small tailor shop, the movie focuses on
the husband and wife who own the business, their two small children, and
their employees (almost all of them scarred survivors of the death
camps) as they take their first faltering steps toward normalcy among
countrymen who can be cruel or indifferent. "A gentle, sad and at times
funny film in the best French tradition of high-quality cinema." -
Variety. Cleveland premiere! Subtitles. 35mm. 94 min.

A LETTER TO TRUE
USA, 2004, Bruce Weber
Saturday, December 18, at 4:10 pm
Sunday, December 19, at 2:15 pm
Dogs are celebrated in this most recent film by famed photographer and
filmmaker Bruce Weber. Weber focuses on his beloved golden retriever,
True, and on his friends' pets; all are seen as emblems of love, trust,
peace, and loyalty in an otherwise corrupt, violent world. Weber
manages to throw a lot of his other favorite things (jazz recordings
from the 50's and 60's, poems, classic film clips, etc.) into his
cinematic collage, and he narrates the movie along with Julie Christie
and Marianne Faithfull. Cleveland premiere! 35mm. 78 min.

COMING OUR FIRST WEEKEND JANUARY 6-9:

THE FILMS OF MAURICE PIALAT begins! French filmmaker Maurice Pialat is
not well known but many have claimed him one of France's greatest
directors including Le Monde and Truffaut. Our first weekend we will
screen some of his films in this 11-film retrospective.

NAKED CHILDHOOD - Pialat's first film co-produced by Truffat about a
troubled 10-year-old abandoned by his mother and thrown from foster home
to foster home.

THE HOUSE IN THE WOODS (Part 1) at The Cleveland Museum of Art - One of
Pialat's greatest and most accessible works was made as a 7-episode
mini-series for French television. (Part 2 plays the following week at CMA)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LE GARCU - Gerard Depardieu stars in Pialat's -- a semi-autobiographical
final film, about a bullying, self-absorbed Parisian professional man
torn between the demands of his wife, mistress, dying father, and
four-year-old son.

ANATOMY OF HELL - Catherine Breillat (FAT GIRL, ROMANCE) is at it again
is this perversely elegant film.

REMEMBER ME, MY LOVE - Monica Bellucci stars in this film about an
Italian family , taken by pop culture's allure. Nominated for 10
Italian Oscars.

THE RASPBERRY REICH - Bruce LaBruce's latest outrage -- a story of a
70's terrorist, a left-wing female extremist who believes that
heterosexual monogamy is the opiate of the masses. She forces men to
have sex with each other.

SHADOW KILL - Adoor Gopalakrishnan's poetic film set in pre-independent
1941 India which tells the story of an aging hangman who, haunted by
guilt over a lifetime of political executions, resorts to drink and
loses his grip on reality. A great film!

THE BROWN BUNNY - Vincent Gallo and Chloe Sevigny star in Gallo's
controversial, minimalist road movie. It wouldn't be that controversial
except for the famous blow job Sevigny gives Gallo at the end of the
movie. A really beautiful movie!
