Master Classes
At The Beck Center in January

The "Business" of Acting (teen - adult) - Local Cleveland Broadcast
Agent, Gretchen Thompson, will teach the in's and out's of
Stage/Film/TV/Radio work. Topics will include: How to get an agent,
establishing a professional resume, headshots, cold call readings,
memorizing a script and other related topics. $80.00 January 4th, 11th,
18th, & 25th from 6pm to 8pm.

Improvisation Workshop (teen) - Dale Shields, one of our Conservatory
Instructors, leads this class. Students will explore the unwritten text
in their hearts and minds towards development of a new piece of written
work. With the structure of "outside of the box" creative thinking and
group support the students will explore various topics that have to do
with their lives, observations and thoughts towards the world. The
workshop will include exercises and round table discussions towards
discovering a process to put their world into its proper non-judgmental
context. This production will be workshopped and put into a small
production for parents/guests to see. Providing a platform where these
young people can speak their minds and find their creativity within
themselves and their challenges and problems can be an enlightening
experience for all who participate and view the work. $90.00 January
5th, 12th, and 19th from 6pm to 9pm. The performance is on January 26th
at 7pm. The show is free.

Basic Directing (teen - adult) - Taught by Cleveland's own James Mango
who was founder and director of Charenton Theatre Company for 5 years.
His production of The Caretaker was named one of the top ten plays in
Cleveland by Tony Brown (The Plain Dealer) in 2002. This class will
cover: choosing a script, Director's concept, Casting a show, Building a
Rehearsal Schedule, Director's Rehearsal Responsibilities, How to work
with actors, and How to manage tech. Mock director's concept, Mock
rehearsal schedule and scenes for study will be provided. $35 January
9th from 1pm to 4:30pm.

Alternative Theatre/Movement Master Class (teen) - G. A. Taggett, actor,
teacher, and director, leads this class into a performance. In this
course students will conceive, create, rehearse and perform a piece
using movement, sound and experimental theatre techniques. $100.00
January 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th from 4pm to 6pm. The
performance is on January 16th at 4pm. Class size is limited.

Workshop for the Young Actor - Speaking Skills (preteen) - Our very own
Rachel Spence, who has been teaching and directing children since 1989,
is the instructor of this class. Students will improve speaking skills
such as projection, diction, pace and inflection. Character voices and
monologue skills will be introduced as well. Through games and vocal
exercises, students will use this workshop to broaden their public
speaking and vocal acting techniques. $30.00 January 10th from 4pm to
7pm.

Brilliant - In 2 minutes! (teen - adult) - Marc Moritz is a professional
actor. He has taught all aspects of acting and theatre at places like
American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York and Second City in
Chicago. This class will help you polish a monologue you already have,
as well as develop new audition pieces. Great for whether you're looking
to get on stage or into college. $40.00 January 13th and 20th from 6pm
to 8pm. Must come to class with one monologue.

Cold Readings - Do's and Don'ts for Actor's Auditions (teen - adult) -
Hands on exercisis and very practical guidelines to prepare for
unprepared auditions. Taught by Brian Zoldessy, actor, director,
teacher! The class is divided into three parts: Presentation - On Stage
Appearance; finding a comfort level; handling and holding of material;
use of physical space, use of physical instrument - voice and body;
taping the UNIQUE self. Cold Reading Techniques: application and
approach to material when given a short time to prepare. Each class will
conclude with a question and answer period and an ADVICE SESSION - Hot
Tips For A Cold Read. Monologues and Scenes will be provided. $45
January 15th, 22nd, and 29th from 11pm - 12:30.

Mime Theater - Enter the exciting and mysterious world of Mime Theater
with International touring artist Stephen Chipps. Class will explore
classical, corporeal, and modern styles of Mime Theater. Great for all

and Choreography for 15 years at places like The Beck, Hudson and Shaker
Heights, will teach you how to fake the fights on stage and screen.
