      Dear Folks,

      The holiday fog that's covered so many of us with parties, =
obligations, shopping, and the shoveling of copious amounts of snow has =
now been lifted. We at Beachland are pleased and proud to present you =
with a riveting extravaganza of shows in the next few weeks, such as our =
very unique 99=A2 show featuring Kiddo and Machine Go Boom. Come down =
for mere pennies and check out the bands that Cleveland's just been =
smitten over. Fans of Japanimation, rock n' roll and slapstick comedy =
won't want to miss the human bowling-pin antics of Peelander-Z! We've =
also got chanteuse Neko Case this weekend backed up by the incomparable =
Sadies. Fans of both indie rock and roots music will dig on the =
golden-voiced Ms. Case and her versatile friends the Sadies--a band that =
can go from cowpunk to authentic honky-tonk to psych-rock at the drop of =
a beer can!

      And for all you budget rockets, we've got two great free events =
coming up: a SOUL DANCE PARTY on January 18th to celebrate the birthday =
of Beachland owner Mark Leddy. Days later, our friends MUSIC SAVES will =
have a listening party featuring cuts from records they'll be selling at =
midnight: Low, Bright Eyes, ...Trail of Dead, and more. The listening =
party will take place on January 24th. And like the SOUL DANCE PARTY, =
it's FREE of charge. Read below for more details on both of these =
low-priced but high-quality events.

      As always, tickets are available at any CD/Game Exchange, Music =
Saves (right down the street from us) and Chris' Warped Records, or by =
going to our website, www.beachlandballroom.com. You can also place an =
order with us down here in the basement/bunker office over the phone. =
Simply call 216-344-9433 and we'll be pleased to take your order.

      Cheers,
      Beachland Ballroom and Tavern

      Sat. Jan 15 Willy Porter 7:30 PM Early Show, $12 adv/$14 DOS, =
Tavern Spend an evening with Willy Porter and experience a rare =
communion between artist and audience. With High Wire Live, his first =
live album, listeners who have never experienced Porter on stage can =
hear the quietly spellbinding majesty and improvisation of Willy Porter =
in his natural milieu. High Wire Live touches the heart of Porter's =
songwriting, his life experience, and the variety of styles that make up =
his distinct musical persona, from the blues-based open-tuned funk of =
"Tribe," to the blinding 6 & 12-string guitar playing that has placed =
him in the vanguard of the new acoustic frontier. Willy Porter is a =
seasoned solo performer who honed his songs and his chops traveling =
across America and Europe playing to captive audiences everywhere. His =
songs are equal parts muscle and intimacy, and reveal a rarely achieved =
relationship between an artist and his craft. What's also exceptional =
about Willy is his stellar, magnetizing guitar playing-think Michael =
Hedges-style dexterity-which moves from the delicate to incendiary at =
the flick of his wrist. Porter has become a master at his craft by =
forming his mind-blowing guitar playing - with a major influence coming =
from acoustic specialist Leo Kottke - rootsy vocals and great sense of =
storytelling, creating a great musical atmosphere. Click here for more! =

      Sat. Jan. 15 Antiseen, Amps II Eleven, Brody's Militia 10:30 PM =
Late Show, $8, Tavern ANTiSEEN has never done anything less than kick =
a**. Band members may have come and band members may have gone but Mad =
Dog Jeff Clayton and Mighty Joe Young have held the Destructo flag high =
all these long years. They have raged a sonic blitzkrieg all the way =
from the backwoods juke joints of South Carolina to the legendary German =
beer halls and left eardrums bleeding on both sides of the ocean. They =
have recorded with the likes of notorious madman GG Allin and legendary =
Alice Cooper guitarist Michael Bruce. Their recordings are the heaviest =
slabs of out of control redneck rockin' you'll ever hope to come =
across.....their live shows are the stuff of legend... and they just get =
meaner with age. ANTiSEEN have been waging a war on musical mediocrity =
for almost twenty years now and by god they're winning. Read these =
quotes: "it's a biker baiting, bile tasting, punk n' roll barb-b-q of =
the damned, all hateful and bothered, and the absolute definition of =
'gumption'. Just don't ask what kind of meat you're eating." "The first =
time I heard Antiseen the music made me want to get drunk and fistfight =
someone, ...anyone who was in the vicinity." Of Amps II Eleven: "Every =
song on this cirrhosis-courting debut sounds like it was written through =
a hangover. The vocals are hollered like a drunk ordering another round. =
Twin guitars rip out greasy leads, with burping, acid-reflux bass piled =
on top. This is blue-collar rock that defines Cleveland as much as =
shitty weather and shittier sports franchises." (Cleveland Scene)=20

      Tues. Jan. 18 FREE! Downtown Soulville Dance Party w/ DJ Race Card =
(Lawrence Caswell) and DJ Mr. Fishtruck (Mark Leddy) spinning old-school =
soul and funk vinyl, 10 PM
      Cheap Beer ($2 domestics, $3 imports all night) Come down and help =
celebrate Fishtruck's birthday! Note: Moved from Wed. Jan. 19=20
      Wed. Jan. 19 The Ike Reilly Assassination 9 PM, $7, Tavern The =
notion of authenticity is crucial to the effectiveness of =
singer-songwriters. Just ask Libertyville, Illinois native Ike Reilly, a =
grizzled artist as fringe-dwelling as the characters in his tunes. After =
honing his skills in a variety of never-were bands in the late =
'80s/early '90s, the father of four gave up music and became a hotel =
doorman to pay the bills. When he finally earned a record deal -- thanks =
to the keen ear of one-half of the production duo the Dust Brothers -- =
his resulting 2001 debut, Salesmen and Racists, barely made a dent =
beyond the used-CD bin. Which was a shame, since Reilly's shadowy =
sketches of ne'er-do-wells and rapscallions -- all matched with =
deceptively cheery bar-blues smokiness -- should have made him a =
working-class hero. This year's Sparkle in the Finish, a less-polished =
sophomore effort, solidifies his reputation as a cult troubadour. The =
same deadbeat characters abound, from one looking to "find me a girl and =
some good cocaine" to a bank robber "only in it for the money . . . =
[and] a little glory too." Sparkle's sonics, furthermore, are purely =
world-weary: "Waitin' for Daddy" gallops like the rawest P.J. Harvey =
songs, while the dour ghost of Mark Eitzel hangs over "Ex-Americans." =

      Thu. Jan 20 Azita, Wisconsin, Good Morning Valentine 9 PM, $7, =
Tavern Azita's album Endantiodromia works in the same way-- terrible, =
compelling and somehow real all at once. Terrible comes first, and I =
mean it in the literary sense: formidable, extreme, bloody, =
larger-than-life. Terrible as in "Ivan, the." With the assistance of =
drummer John McEntire, bassist Matthew Lux, guitarist Jeff Parker, and =
cornetist Rob Mazurek, Azita plays armchair pub jazz in 70s half-step =
melodies, composing jittery modernist piano pieces for the pop age. Her =
singing voice, petted down quite a lot from her war-cry days in Chicago =
no-punk greats the Scissor Girls and Bride of Nono, is a flimsy, =
moppety, rubbery alto that never knows which note is safe to pitch a =
tent upon. She interprets her compositions like Linda Ronstadt's record =
with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, if Linda had first washed down a =
couple valium pills with a flask of Maker's Mark. Or, like Yoko Ono =
fronting Get Hustle. Or, on the vocal-free numbers, like Gyorgy Kurtag's =
jagged, frightening vocal explorations and Scriabin piano concertos =
interpreted in a pop-jazz context. Two of this area's more exciting =
bands return to the Tavern stage tonight: the heavy and wordless plate =
tectonic rock of Wisconsin. Good Morning Valentine brings to mind an =
eloquent updating of 70s singer-songwriter melancholia coupled with =
twang and that certain je ne sais quoi (we find that these are more fun =
to write when we throw in extemporaneous and ill-spelled francologisms). =

      Fri. Jan. 21 The Gin Palace Jesters, The Wailin' Elroys 9:30 PM, =
$7, Tavern "Chicago's original honky-tonk fools," the Gin Palace Jesters =
are purveyors of the finest in hard hitting hillbilly Honky-tonk, =
Country Boogie and Western Swing . Infused with a deep and sincere =
fondness for all traditional American musical styles, the sound of the =
Gin Palace Jesters could best be described as being akin to the sounds =
of Country Music's "Golden" age. Although a portion of their live =
performances come from their vast catalog of the Hillbilly & Country Hit =
Parade, these boys are not mere followers or imitators. They also posses =
the talent of 3 songwriters performing original novelty numbers, =
heartfelt love songs, honky-tonk weepers, drinking songs and dark =
ballads. Delivering 3 and 4 part country harmony, the Gin Palace Jesters =
prove that authentic country and cowboy music can still hold validity in =
both traditional songs as well as brand spankin' new originals. The =
Wailin' Elroys offer a brilliant mixture of modern and authentic =
rockabilly music. CD includes a Killer version of Eddie Cochran's Twenty =
Flight Rock and a WOW more than cool interpretation of the old school =
Punk classic Havanna Affair from the Ramones. This is trash in the most =
positive way and you'll better stumble to your next local dealer or =
order it directly from us, because this thang is a definitive must for =
everybody. Click here for more! BUY TICKETS NOW!=20
      Sat. Jan. 22 Don Dixon, The Carpenter Ants 8 PM, $8 ADV / $10 DOS, =
Tavern Producer, musician, performer, vocalist and songwriter Don Dixon =
is perhaps best known for his work as producer for some of America's =
favorite artists including R.E.M., Marshall Crenshaw, The Smithereens, =
and his wife, Marti Jones. Dixon started out as a bass player and =
vocalist for North Carolina band Arrogance. The band's five albums =
spread over almost a decade and generated a fervent regional following =
before the band went their separate ways, and Dixon decided to try his =
hand at producing and creating his own solo records. Dixon's songwriting =
talents garnered him a single on the Joe Cocker million-seller with "I =
Can Hear The River" and a co-write of the song "Time and Time Again" =
with the Counting Crows. And while writing, Dixon also has been playing. =
He played bass on Mary Chapin Carpenter's #1 single "Shut Up And Kiss =
Me." Dixon completed a run in New York City, along with Jim Wann and =
Bland Simpson, in a rollicking cabaret show about life in the coastal =
Carolinas entitled "King Mackerel & The Blues Are Runnin'." Click here =

      Sun. Jan 23 Kristin Hersh, Ben Weaver 8:30 PM, $12 ADV/$14 DOS, =
Tavern In a career full of busy years, 2003 stands out as a very busy =
year for Kristin Hersh. In March of 2003 Hersh put out not one, but two =
full-length releases -- The Grotto, her fifth solo record and an all-new =
Throwing Muses record for the first time in seven years. Add to that the =
birth of her fourth son (Bodhi), months of touring, a cross-country =
move, and the formation of her first new band since she began making =
music with Throwing Muses in the early eighties: 50 Foot Wave. "Throwing =
Muses" was the work of a musician clearly delighted to be reunited with =
her electric guitar and her band. The angular, furious songs on that =
record, shot through with rock-goddess guitar work by Kristin was both a =
return to the band's roots and a jumping off point for something new =
altogether. "The Grotto" showed us a woman profoundly in control of her =
music -- each sound as well as each silence. 50 Foot Wave takes that =
exquisite control and infuses it with an energetic intensity -- The =
urgency and freshness of these songs is palpable in 50 Foot Wave's =
rock-assault. This show features Kristin in a solo setting, less loud =
but no less intimate and gripping. Ben Weaver is a folk/Americana =
songwriter, guitarist and singer with a rough sing/say voice that brings =
to mind the younger John Prine, a sly growl perfectly suited to his =
downbeat tales of lost love and hopelessness. He has a gift for =
startling images and melodies that stick in your mind after a single =
listen. "...strange, skin-prickling tales picked up from the Moebius =
strip of a lost highway he's been compelled to travel on.... like a =
hillbilly Leonard Cohen." ( Sylvie Simmons, MOJO) Click here for more! =

      Tues. Jan. 25 Bobby Bare Jr. (w/ Duane Denison=85Jesus Lizard, =
Tomahawk), Heartless Bastards 9 PM, $10, Tavern While Bobby Bare Jr., =
scion of country music legend Bobby Bare Sr., can't claim to have never =
ridden his famous father's coattails - after all, he was nominated for a =
Grammy for a duet with the old man - by and large he's staked out his =
very own territory on the musical landscape. To wit: the Nashville-Bare =
Jr. was only 5 years-old when he recorded that Grammy-nominated duet, =
and his first two albums, Boo-Tay and Brainwasher (credited to his band, =
Bare Jr.), owed more to punk, indie and Southern rock than =
straight-up-country. Bare Jr.'s more recent recordings - 2002's =
acclaimed Young Criminal's Starvation League, 2003's OK I'm Sorry EP and =
this summer's From the End of Your Leash - all find him moving a little =
closer to singer-songwriter-driven rootsy fare, albeit still with a =
progressive-leaning rock 'n' roll heart. London's Independent hails =
Bobby Bare Jr. as "one of the best commercially undiscovered artists on =
the leftbank of Americana," which roughly translated means that he's too =
dang good for his own good =85 or at least for mainstream radio. Bobby =
puts on one wild, unpredictable show every time he's here-whether he's =
whipping up some hell-raisin' rock n' roll or strumming to introspective =
pop melancholia, it goes to show you never can tell. On guitar with =
Bobby we'll have Duane Denison, the remarkable and inimitable guitarist =
formely with the Jesus Lizard and currently with the Mike Patton-led =
ensemble, Tomahawk. Click here for more! BUY TICKETS NOW! =20

      19 The Ike Reilly Assassination 9 PM, $7, Tavern</B> The notion of =

      authenticity is crucial to the effectiveness of =
singer-songwriters. Just=20
      ask Libertyville, Illinois native Ike Reilly, a grizzled artist as =

      fringe-dwelling as the characters in his tunes. After honing his =
skills in=20
      a variety of never-were bands in the late '80s/early '90s, the =
father of=20
      four gave up music and became a hotel doorman to pay the bills. =
When he=20
      finally earned a record deal -- thanks to the keen ear of one-half =
of the=20
      production duo the Dust Brothers -- his resulting 2001 debut, =
Salesmen and=20
      Racists, barely made a dent beyond the used-CD bin. Which was a =
shame,=20
      since Reilly's shadowy sketches of ne'er-do-wells and rapscallions =
-- all=20
      matched with deceptively cheery bar-blues smokiness -- should have =
made=20
      him a working-class hero. This year's Sparkle in the Finish, a=20
      less-polished sophomore effort, solidifies his reputation as a =
cult=20
      troubadour. The same deadbeat characters abound, from one looking =
to "find=20
      me a girl and some good cocaine" to a bank robber "only in it for =
the=20
      money . . . [and] a little glory too." Sparkle's sonics, =
furthermore, are=20
      purely world-weary: "Waitin' for Daddy" gallops like the rawest =
P.J.=20
      Harvey songs, while the dour ghost of Mark Eitzel hangs over=20
      "Ex-Americans." (Annie Zaleski) <A =

Azita's=20
      album Endantiodromia works in the same way-- terrible, compelling =
and=20
      somehow real all at once. Terrible comes first, and I mean it in =
the=20
      literary sense: formidable, extreme, bloody, larger-than-life. =
Terrible as=20
      in "Ivan, the." With the assistance of drummer John McEntire, =
bassist=20
      Matthew Lux, guitarist Jeff Parker, and cornetist Rob Mazurek, =
Azita plays=20
      armchair pub jazz in 70s half-step melodies, composing jittery =
modernist=20
      piano pieces for the pop age. Her singing voice, petted down quite =
a lot=20
      from her war-cry days in Chicago no-punk greats the Scissor Girls =
and=20
      Bride of Nono, is a flimsy, moppety, rubbery alto that never knows =
which=20
      note is safe to pitch a tent upon. She interprets her compositions =
like=20
      Linda Ronstadt's record with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, if Linda =
had=20
      first washed down a couple valium pills with a flask of Maker's =
Mark. Or,=20
      like Yoko Ono fronting Get Hustle. Or, on the vocal-free numbers, =
like=20
      Gyorgy Kurtag's jagged, frightening vocal explorations and =
Scriabin piano=20
      concertos interpreted in a pop-jazz context. Two of this area's =
more=20
      exciting bands return to the Tavern stage tonight: the heavy and =
wordless=20
      plate tectonic rock of Wisconsin. Good Morning Valentine brings to =
mind an=20
      eloquent updating of 70s singer-songwriter melancholia coupled =
with twang=20
      and that certain je ne sais quoi (we find that these are more fun =
to write=20

Country=20
      Music's "Golden" age. Although a portion of their live =

these=20

talent of 3=20

songs,=20
      honky-tonk weepers, drinking songs and dark ballads. Delivering 3 =

as well=20

Kristin=20

      releases -- The Grotto, her fifth solo record and an all-new =
Throwing=20
      Muses record for the first time in seven years. Add to that the =
birth of=20
      her fourth son (Bodhi), months of touring, a cross-country move, =
and the=20
      formation of her first new band since she began making music with =
Throwing=20
      Muses in the early eighties: 50 Foot Wave. "Throwing Muses" was =
the work=20
      of a musician clearly delighted to be reunited with her electric =
guitar=20
      and her band. The angular, furious songs on that record, shot =
through with=20
      rock-goddess guitar work by Kristin was both a return to the =
band's roots=20
      and a jumping off point for something new altogether. "The Grotto" =
showed=20
      us a woman profoundly in control of her music -- each sound as =

      each silence. 50 Foot Wave takes that exquisite control and =
infuses it=20
      with an energetic intensity -- The urgency and freshness of these =
songs is=20
      palpable in 50 Foot Wave's rock-assault. This show features =
Kristin in a=20
      solo setting, less loud but no less intimate and gripping. Ben =
Weaver is a=20
      folk/Americana songwriter, guitarist and singer with a rough =
sing/say=20
      voice that brings to mind the younger John Prine, a sly growl =
perfectly=20
      suited to his downbeat tales of lost love and hopelessness. He has =
a gift=20
