January 13-16

Someone told me yesterday that their personal hell froze over because
they noticed we were playing a film starring Neve Campbell. Yes, the
same Neve Campbell who has starred in such classics as SCREAM, SCREAM 2,
SCREAM 3 and the memorable PAINT CANS. She's also starred in THE
COMPANY, Robert Altman's film from last year. Although we've never
shown a Neve Campbell film here on the big screen at Cinematheque, this
isn't the most shocking event to ever occur. I remember when John Ewing
(Director of Cinematheque) put John Wayne on the cover of the flyer.
(It almost caused a revolution from the inside!) Then there was the
screening of TITANIC! Well, let's just say that we cater to all movie
tastes, and if that means showing a film that raises eyebrows among
those who pigeonhole us, then so be it. We show films by great
directors -- that's the explanation for the John Wayne cover (a series
of Howard Hawks films) and TITANIC (James Cameron). WHEN WILL I BE LOVED
is not a Neve Campbell film; it's a James Toback film that happens to
star Neve Campbell.

So come on down this weekend where you'll see a lot more than Neve
Campbell in WHEN WILL I BE LOVED. You'll see a slew of great movies in
sparkling 35mm prints! See you this weekend!

minutes. Set in a rural French village during WWI, the movie focuses on

survive the war. "It's better to see some of this film than to see none
of it at all." - John Ewing. Beta SP. Shown at The Cleveland Museum of
Art, 11150 East Blvd. Admission to film $7, CMA and Cinematheque
members $5, seniors (65 & older) $4, students $3.

GOOD MORNING
OHAYO
Japan, 1959, Yasujiro Ozu
Sunday, January 16, at 7:00 pm
If you missed all of the Ozu films we showed in September and October
(shame on you, by the way), you have a final chance to redeem yourself
-- and discover one of the all-time great filmmakers in the process!
This 1959 comedy -- shown in a new 35mm color print that, on the basis
of the color prints we showed last fall, will be absolutely beautiful --
focuses on two young Japanese brothers who go on a "talking strike" when
their father (the great Chishu Ryu, an Ozu regular) refuses to buy them
a TV set. Warning: the boys' recurrent farting game may shock certain
connoisseurs of art house cinema, but Ozu was never too lofty for
occasional lowbrow humor. Subtitles. 94 min.

NEXT WEEK:

GRADUATE FIRST - More Maurice Pialat in his 1978 film about high school
students in northern France as they spend their days doing nothing
remotely academic.

WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH - Scenic, stylish, old-school thrills of
the spaghetti western are found in this Chinese action film!

A NOS AMOURS ( TO OUR LOVE) - Pialat film starring the beautiful
Sandrine Bonnaire in her screen appearance. She's a very naughty girl!

DAYS OF BEING WILD - Wong Kar-wai's fantastic breakthrough film starring
Maggie Cheung and the late Leslie Cheung. Don't miss this one!

THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER - Special event with son of Timothy Carey.
More on this event Friday in special email!

TWEET's LADIES OF PASADENA - Romeo Carey event!

UNDER THE SON OF SATAN - Depardieu, Bonnaire, and Pialat star in this
major Pialat film that won the Palme d'Or in 1987 at Cannes!

THE MAGNIFICIENT AMBERSONS - New series starts Monday, 1/24 with great
classic films and local film people introducing!

WRESTLING WITH MANHOOD BOYS, BULLYING & BATTERING - Filmmaker in
person! More on this event later!
