The Unifying Message of Diversity: Program for Students Shows That One
Culture Rises From Many
BY MIKE LESKO, STAFF WRITER
She put on a blue and red beret-style hat like Christopher Columbus
would have worn. She assumed an Italian accent to more closely approximate
Columbus, who sailed from Spain in search of India and wound up in North America.
"It wasn't exactly a new world. There were already millions of people
there," she said, impersonating Columbus. "But it was new to me."
Robin Pease gave an animated presentation about different cultures last
week to a gym full of pupils at Carylwood Intermediate School in Bedford. Along
with Tom Kerr, she represented Kulture Kids, which gives educational theater
programs.
"We explore the differences and similarities in people and learn how
similar we really are," Kerr said afterward. "It is so children can discover their
own cultures."
Kulture Kids' "From Whence We Came" literacy project is funded by a Martha
Holden Jennings Foundation grant and will be presented in all five elementary
schools in the Bedford district. It aims to improve writing, reading and
social studies plus improve students' learning in the arts.
"Theater is fun", said Jeanette Cardwell, Bedford Schools' Multicultural
Coordinator. "It engages all people in different ways and gives individuals a
chance to express themselves in their own unique style."
During the rest of the school year, youngsters will create writing and art
projects related to their histories and cultures. The projects will be on
display at each school....
