Cleveland, Ohio - The Beck Center for the Arts presents "a captivating =
and unbelievable achievement," in Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour, =
directed by Sarah May. This 1934 American classic opens January 21 and =
runs through February 13 in the intimate Studio Theater. =20

The premise behind Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour is that an =
unhappy student at a private girl's school accuses her teachers Karen =
Wright and Martha Dobie of "unspeakable acts," then bullies her =
classmates into confirming her story. Her horrible lie ultimately =
destroys the school and the lives of everyone involved. Miss Hellman =
always held that the play was about the irreparable damage that can be =
done by lies and gossip. She herself lived by that belief; and used it =
to defy the House Un-American Activities Hearings in the 1950s.

Originally appearing on Broadway in 1934, The Children's Hour was well =
received by critics. However, due to its subject matter the play was =
banned in Chicago, Boston, and London. Since the original staged =
production of The Children's Hour it has been made into a movie twice. =
The more faithful and noted version was the 1962 production of The =
Children's Hour, which starred Audrey Hepburn as Karen Wright and =
Shirely MacLaine as Martha Dobie. =20

Director Sarah May says, "It is a thrill to work on this great play. The =
play is still so powerful and shocking; not shocking because of the =
subject matter, but because of the devastation that is caused by a =
little girl's accusations. I think it is very timely. Also, Miss =
Hellman created some of the best characters ever written for the stage, =
and that means we were able to attract some of Cleveland's best talent =
for this show. We are so fortunate to have the best "old pros" and also =
some wonderful young actresses playing the students of the school."

The cast for The Children's Hour includes Jennifer Clifford as Karen =
Wright, Equity Actor Nicholas Koester who recently appeared in the =
critically acclaimed Fully Committed as Dr. Joe Cardin ~ Karen Wright's =
fianc=E9, Kristie Lang as Martha Dobie, Heather Farr as Mary Tilford, =
Rhoda Rosen as Mrs. Amelia Tilford, and Mary Jane Nottage as Mrs. Lily =
Mortar.

The Children's Hour raises questions about the new role of the child as =
a witness. This piece of work by Lillian Hellman provokes us to think =
about the power behind truth and lies. It also forces us to deal with =
relational aggression and how girls (and boys) hurt each other. Friday =
night performances, January 28th, February 4th and February 11th, will =
be followed by audience "talk back" sessions with psychology experts, =
child advocates and middle school students.

The Beck Center's production of The Children's Hour is sponsored by 90.3 =
WCPN ideastream and Lakewoodbuzz.com. Show times are Fridays and =
Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets for The Children's Hour are $26 for adults, $23 for seniors and =
$15 for students (22 and under with ID). All individual ticket sales are =
subject to a $2 administrative fee per ticket applied at the time of =
ticket reservation. For tickets call 216.521.2540 or visit =
www.beckcenter.org <http://www.beckcenter.org/> . The Beck Center is =
located just 10 minutes west of downtown Cleveland at 17801 Detroit =
Avenue in Lakewood.
