Weathervane Playhouse is pleased to present Frank Galati's Tony =
Award-winning play THE=20
WRATH based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck's themes of =
survival, perseverance and dignity are brought to life through this =

Education) and is open to middle and high school students and their =
teachers.

History

Thousands of settlers came to the Southern Plains having been lured by =
the promise of rich, plentiful soil. They brought with them farming =
techniques that worked well in the North and East. They plowed millions =
of acres of grassland, only to have the rains stop in the summer of =
1931. The catastrophic eight-year drought that followed led to the =
naming of the region the "Dust Bowl." When the drought and dust storms =
showed no signs of letting up, many people abandoned their land. Others =
were forced out when they lost their land in bank foreclosures. In all, =
one-quarter of the population left, packing everything they owned into =
their cars and trucks, and headed west toward California.

These migrants did not receive a warm welcome in California and were =
faced with a life almost as difficult as the one they had left. Many =
farms were corporate-owned. The rolling fields of wheat were replaced by =
crops of fruit, nuts and vegetables. Some 40 percent of migrant farmers =
wound up in the San Joaquin Valley picking grapes and cotton and were =
paid by quantity picked, with earnings from seventy-five cents to $1.25 =
a day.

Weathervane's Production

Weathervane's production is set against original live music which is =
performed on stage by members of the Fraleigh family as we follow the =
luckless Joads on their journey from their Oklahoma Dust Bowl farm to =
what they hope will be a better life in the rich fields of California. =
Revisit this time in American history as a cast of 27 actors illuminates =
the tireless themes of survival, perseverance and dignity.

Find out where true strength lies to endure adversity and to lay the =
foundations of a new human community based on universal love in THE =
GRAPES OF WRATH, at Weathervane February 16 - March 6. Low-cost preview =
