Eva Withers-Evans makes a queenly but momlike barkeep; Desmond Jones =
hits the right notes as a gold-chain-laden young man on the make named =
Jiggy; and Marvin Hayes moves and talks slowly but has much to say as =
the elder statesman of the establishment. But the entire 10-member cast =
- including Cornell Calhoun, Kenny Johnson, James Seward, Tiffany Renee =
Allison, Denise Richmond Kelley, Leonard Goff and Tina Thompkins - =
performs unselfishly as an ensemble. "Johnnie Taylor Is Gone" is far =
from a perfect script. But the Karamu production helps find the life in =
this slice of life. Tony Brown (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Playwright Gregory S. Carr has fashioned an absolutely delightful if not =
particularly insightful evening around 10 denizens of the Golden Zodiac =
Lounge (picture a black Cheers) in North St. Louis. Within these cozy =
confines, the employees and patrons spend their idle time signifying, =
playing the dozens, and generally tormenting each other -- usually for =
fun. This lively Karamu production is a fortuitous convergence of a =
hilarious script, several finely calibrated performances, and =
pace-perfect direction by Caroline Jackson Smith. - Christine Howey =
(Scene Magazine)

The World Premier of St. Louis playwright Gregory S. Carr's "Johnnie =
Taylor Is Gone" directed by Caroline Jackson-Smith, which opened =
January 28th - February 20th in the Arena Theatre is a sell out. The =
audience are dancing to the beat and singing the tunes of Johnnie =
Taylor, Minnie Riperton and Marvin Gaye as this hilarious play takes =
them down memory lane.=20

Thursday - $5, Friday-Sunday- $10
Thursday-Saturday @ 8PM
Sunday @ 3PM

(The best price and best seat in town celebrating Black History Month!)

Selected from the 12th Annual R. Joyce Whitley Arena Festival of New =
Plays in 2004, "Johnnie Taylor Is Gone" takes place in the Golden Zodiac =
Lounge, a bar in North St. Louis, is a haven for a colorful group of =
"Old School" misfits led by the owner Will Strong. In their world, =
Johnnie Taylor is king and Koko Taylor is queen until a "New Jack" =
entrepreneur wants to settle a score and turn the bar into a Hip-Hop =
club. Religion, politics, sports and music provide fodder in this new =
comedy.
