"Love's fire heats water, water cools not love" 
William Shakespeare, Sonnet 154
This extraordinary project by The Acting Company of New York brought
together the most creative playwrights at work today.  Their unique tribute
to Shakespeare's sonnets defies the constraints of time and twists the
borders of gender to speak of the tragedies and triumphs of love.  The Fine
Arts Association is excited to present a selection of one acts by five of
America's contemporary playwrights showcasing their reimagination of
Shakespeare's love sonnets stretching creative license to new heights. 
Roles available - 
an ensemble of 10-12 actors
Actors may be cast in more than one piece.
Bitter Sauce by Eric Begosian -
1 woman (20's-30's) & 2 men (20's-40's) 
A fragile farce of sexual jealousy and obsession.   
A couple and their impending marriage slated for the next day confront their
differing perceptions of love, 
complicated by her biker-lover's arrival.
140 by Marsha Norman -
4 women (20's-50's) & 4 men (20's-50's) 
Confronts infidelity and the nature of modern relationships, depicting a web
of lovers, 
each betraying & feeling betrayed by one another.
Terminating, or Lass Mein Schmerzen Nicht Verloren Sein, or Ambivalence by
Tony Kushner - 
2 men (20's-40's) & 2 women (20's-40's)
Three parallel scenes present Hendryk with his therapist, Esther and their
lovers, Billygoat and Dymphna - his and hers, respectively.  In just
moments, Hendryk's session moves them through the meaning of life, death,
tattoos, taboos, and the like, as he struggles to understand love.

Waiting for Philip Glass by Wendy Wasserstein
4 women (30's-40's) & 3 men (30's-40's) 
An upscale New York party is the setting for this search for the true nature
of love 
and what happens to lovers once they are parted. 
The General of Hot Desire by John Guare
5 women (20's-30's) & 5 men (20's-30's) 
Graduate students try to make sense out of Sonnets 153 and 154,  first by
reading study aids and with a group 'epiphany' begin to act out New and Old
Testament stories of the interaction among humans and between humans and God
who are trying to find the true happiness that always seems to elude them.
