Actors' Summit Theater presents=20
the regional premiere of=20
The Herbal Bed
           =20
Actors=E2=80=99 Summit Theater announces the regional premiere of The Herbal=
 Bed, a=20
new drama by Peter Whelan. The play will have a preview performance on=20
Thursday, February 17, and will play through March 6 at Actors=E2=80=99 Summ=
it Theater in=20
downtown Hudson.=20
=20
The Play
The Herbal Bed is based on actual events which occurred in=20
Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613 when William Shakespeare=E2=80=99s=
 eldest daughter Susanna was=20
publicly accused of having a sexual liaison with Rafe Smith, a married=20
neighbor and family friend.=20
=20
Despite a recanting by her accuser, the young Jack Lane, Susanna sues for=20
slander in the court of Worcester Cathedral. Susanna=E2=80=99s husband, the=20=
respected=20
physician of Stratford John Hall, is desperate for her to clear her name in=20=
order=20
to save his practice and he gives her his complete support -- but how can he=
=20
avoid the fact that one summer=E2=80=99s night while he was away from Stratf=
ord, Rafe=20
Smith was seen secretly leaving their herbal garden? Faced with political=20
divisions within the church, the hearing in the bishop=E2=80=99s court becom=
es a risky=20
gamble as three people=E2=80=99s private lives are held up to the glare of i=
ntense public=20
scrutiny.
=20
The Playwright
Peter Whelan was born in the Potteries in 1931. He began writing for the=20
stage through collaborations, Lakota with Don Kinkaid and Double Edge with=20=
Leslie=20
Darbon, which was presented at the Vaudeville Theatre. Peter=E2=80=99s other=
 plays=20
include Captain Swing, The Accrington Pals, Clay, The Bright and Bold Design=
 and=20
The School of Night, all premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and=20
Divine Right. He has also adapted Jose Triana=E2=80=99s Worlds Apart for the=
 RSC. His=20
television writing includes three episodes of In Suspicious Circumstances an=
d The=20
Trial of Lord Lucan, all for Granada. Peter is married with three children a=
nd=20
lives in West London.
=20
