Yuri Lane in From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beatbox Journey

=20

Human Beatbox and Vocal Magician Delivers a Hip-Hop Travelogue of Peace

March 5, 2005 at Cleveland State University=92s Drinko Hall

=20

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Cleveland in association with =
Robert
Friedman presents Yuri Lane in From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beatbox =
Journey,
for one performance only, March 5 at 8:30 p.m. at Cleveland State
University=92s Drinko Hall in the Music and Communication Center. This
extraordinary one-man show is a high energy portrait of everyday life in =
the
Middle East and is presented in partnership with Cleveland State
University=92s Center for the Study of the Arts.

=20

This is the third event of the JCC=92s newly launched 2004-05 Arts & =
Culture
Season which has been made possible by a grant from the Green Arts Fund =
of
the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland and is dedicated to Roe =
Green.

=20

>From Tel Aviv to Ramallah is the first narrative drama in beatbox. =
Taking
audiences beyond the sterile headlines and detached news reports, it
provides a vibrant and complex portrait of daily life in the midst of =
the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The story revolves around Amir, a Tel =
Aviv DJ
and delivery boy, and Khalid, a Ramallah internet caf=E9 owner whose =
parallel
lives are separated by a barrier at center stage. Over the course of =
the
day, the young Israeli and Palestinian strive to realize their dreams of
fame and fortune, yet encounter the distinct ways in which political
conflict negates youthful dreams. Combining theatrical versatility, =
comic
dance and a cappella dexterity, Yuri Lane portrays Khalid, Amir, and =
their
respective Westernized friends, extremist friends, mothers and cities =
with
the precision of a seasoned solo performer and the beats of a hip-hop
superstar.=20

=20

>From Tel Aviv to Ramallah is the result of a revolutionary collaboration
between Yuri Lane, a Jewish =93human beatbox;=94 writer/director Rachel
Havrelock, a religion scholar who is also Yuri=92s wife; and Sharif =
Ezzat, a
Muslim video artist. Inspired by the =93ordinary people=94 encountered =
by Lane
and Havrelock on a journey from Tel Aviv to Ramallah at the beginning of =
the
Intifada, Lane brings to life 15 unforgettable characters -- each
materializing as a three-dimensional person with an individual beatbox
soundtrack over the course of 60 minutes. This spellbinding hip-hop =
theater
piece also features live =93sets=94 generated by Ezzat, whose shifting =
visual
projections are timed according to Lane=92s hypnotic beatbox, =93vocal
percussion=94 soundtrack.

=20

=93While the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is topical, this is not at all =
a
politically divisive play and there=92s no background reading required =
to
attend,=94 quipped Havrelock. =93Our goal is to utilize Yuri=92s amazing =
ability
as a =91human instrument=92 to produce a soundscape of everyday life and =
culture
in the Middle East.=94=20

=20

Although raised in the counter-culture of Haight-Asbury, where he =
learned
rhythm and break dancing by osmosis, Lane is a classically trained =
actor,
whose career began at age 12 at San Francisco=92s American Conservatory
Theater. The rest of his teen and young adult years were spent on stage =
and
screen, earning him valuable memberships in Actors Equity and Screen =
Actors
Guild. He created his first one-man =93beatbox=94 musical, Soundtrack =
City, in
2001. Lane and Havrelock recently relocated from San Francisco to =
Chicago,
where Lane continues to hone his craft and Havrelock serves as a =
professor
of Jewish Studies and Religion at the University of Illinois-Chicago. =

more information about Yuri Lane visit www.yurilane.com

This performance was originally planned to take place at the Rock and =
Roll
Hall of Fame and Museum=AE, but due to a conflict in the scheduling of
construction work at the Rock Hall it has been moved to Cleveland State
University=92s Drinko Hall.

=20

=93We regret that the scheduling of our floor reconstruction prevented =
us from
holding the event here, as originally planned, but the Rock Hall is =
pleased
to support the Jewish Community Center=92s performance of Yuri Lane=94 =
states
Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and
Museum=AE.

=20

Each ticket purchased for Yuri Lane=92s show includes a $20 adult ticket =
to
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum=AE that is good through =
December 31,
2005.=20

=20

Ticket prices for Yuri Lane in From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beatbox =
Journey
are $25 for the general public and $20 for students, seniors and groups =
of
10 or more. All seats are general admission (no reserved seating).

=20

3505 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118. On the day of the
performance only, tickets may be purchased one hour prior to the =
performance
at the door. Cleveland State University=92s Drinko Hall is located in =
the
Music and Communication Center, at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East =
21st
Street, (downtown) Cleveland, OH 44115. There is covered parking =
nearby on
East 21st Street between Chester and Euclid Avenues.

           =20

The Jewish Community Center is also partnering with Cleveland State
University to present a unique educational encounter with Yuri Lane at a
Youth Forum Day, on Friday, March 4, from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm, at =
Cleveland
State University. The Youth Forum will explore the issues of tolerance =
and
diversity that are embodied in Yuri Lane's show. Each school is =
invited to
send a team of 10-15 students, accompanied by a faculty member. In =
small
work groups, students will examine the arts as an avenue for conflict
resolution, interacting with Yuri Lane as well as Cleveland area artists =
in
the fields of theater, visual arts, music, and dance. School team =
members
can be drawn from among student leaders, students interested and =
involved in
the arts, or social studies classes.

=20

Thanks to grants from the Green Arts Fund of the Jewish Community
Federation, and Cuyahoga County Economic Development, the Youth Forum =
will
be presented free of charge to the schools. Lunch will be provided by
Cleveland State University. Schools are responsible for transportation =
to
Cleveland State University, but limited funds may be available for
transportation reimbursement if a need can be demonstrated. Attendance =
will
be limited to 10 schools. For further information or to reserve a =
slot,
contact Sue Sellers of the JCC Arts & Culture program at 216-593-6258. =20

    =20

Upcoming performances of the JCC=92s 2004-05 Arts & Culture Season =
include the
JCC's fifth-annual An Evening of Classical Music (May 8, 2005); and the
world premiere of Albi Gorn's play, To Know Him (May 5-22, 2005).

=20

The JCC is a proud recipient of a Cuyahoga County Economic Development =
Grant
for its Arts & Culture program. This funding is provided in part by the
generous support of the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners: Jimmy
Dimora, Peter Lawson Jones and Tim McCormack. =20

=20

The JCC gratefully acknowledges the support of the Holiday Inn =96 =
Beachwood.

=20

=20
