I enjoyed the collective reminiscences of Arthur Miller -- it is not
surprising that so many on the list have come to know him in one way or
another. I must admit I found him quite by accident.

During the early days of my acting career, there were a rush of plays
being produced by the 'New' Black playwrights; the 70's offered a wealth
of lively, vibrant characters that stood up to audience scrutiny days
after the house lights came up. I never like auditioning with cliche
monologues -- even if there were five 'colored girls' to choose from.
The range of female characters never left the neighborhood, so I started
to explore non-traditional possibilities. Monologues are such precious
tools for constructing 'range,' and I can only than Mr. Miller
(posthumously, of course) for adding Linda Loman to my toolbox. After
all these years, she is still in tact, neatly tucked behind the cerebral
lobe next to Billy Shakespeare's Cymbelline.

Mr. Miller seems to have had great respect for the inner strength of a
woman. Do you think that may have been his attraction to Marilyn?
