Announcing

Lakeland Theatre's

production of

 Born Yesterday

By Garson Kanin

Director Martin Friedman

Sets and Lights Design Keith Nagy

Costumes Design Craig Tucker

      Sound Design William Amato

Production Stage Manager Milena Stojick

First produced in 1946 in New York City; directed by Garson Kanin, featuring Judy Holliday (Tony Award winner) and Paul Douglas. Feature film, directed by George Cukor and featuring Judy Holliday (Academy Award winner), William Holden and Brodrick Crawford in 1950.

A romantic comedy played out against the 1940's. The politics of "by the people, for the people and of the people", still work whether you are a blue or red state kind of guy. This is a special production which features the acting of Liz Conway, Marc Cipra, Andrew Narten, Bob Keefe and Bob Fadely. Wonderful sets and lights by Keith Nagy.

THE STORY: The vulgar junkman Harry Brock has come to Washington to make crooked deals with government big-wigs. He has brought with him the charming but dumb ex-chorus girl Billie. Billie must be taught how to act in public. The idealistic reporter Paul Verrall, who has been investigating political skullduggery and is interested in Brock's activities, agrees for a salary, to educate Billie. He finds Billie has a natural honesty and a frank streak in her, and she begins to learn about history, politics, and what Harry really is and what he wants. This precipitates a crisis, as Billie readies to leave Harry for a new life of her own. Harry's reaction takes the only form he knows: physical violence. Billie now knows that she can no longer have anything to do with Brock, and r ealizes she and Paul have fallen genuinely in love.

Plain Dealer Review of Born Yesterday by Tony Brown

THEATER

Worthy lessons in rights, U.S. history

Monday, February 07, 2005 Tony Brown Plain Dealer Theater Critic

Rights - civil rights and the rights of a people to govern themselves -

inform a new and graphic children's drama and a classic American comedy that opened over the weekend at a pair of the Cleveland area's emerging professional theaters.

Born political

Another out-of-balance cast sometimes causes the Lakeland Theatre's

"Born Yesterday" to wobble out of control. But once Kanin's gentle comedy from a bygone era gets rolling, its warm humor envelops us in its

patriotic arms, and all quibbles and doubts seem to evaporate.

There's nothing wobbly, however, about set designer Keith Nagy's swanky Washington hotel room, with its moldings and filigrees and stylish furnishings (including a grand piano), not to mention the ghostly Capitol dome out the enormous picture window.

And straightforward, detail-eyed director Martin Friedman gets a trio

of always solid and occasionally even dazzling performances from the

actors in the central roles. Big Mark Cipra sweats and rails and storms and frets as Harry Brock, the shady "waste management" magnate who comes to D.C. at the dawn of its postwar era as an "elegant" but corrupt city to buy himself a senator.

His moll, ex-chorus girl Billie Dawn, is guaranteed to get any

red-blooded American (heterosexual) male's jingoistic heart a-pumping, thanks to the performance of Liz Conway. She's built like a stack of red-clay building blocks and grows sexier in her transformation to educated do-gooder.

And as her teacher, crusading journalist Paul Verrall, endearingly

nerdy Andrew Narten squints with a quiet authority behind his heavy-framed spectacles, a man elegant in his academic prowess.

Except for a few decent turns by Bob Keefe as Harry's hard-drinking,

philosophical lawyer and Robert Fadeley as thick-hick Sen. Norvel Hedges, the supporting cast fails, in general, to support that central

threesome.

As stiff and slow as the opening act is, it nicely sets up the last

two, whose comedy works like machinery (though not exactly as well-oiled as the material deserves).

Performances through Feb. 20 at Lakeland Community College, Kirtland.

Tickets are $10. Call 440-525-7034 or 440-525-4774.
