Please post our call for proposals. This may be way too long - if so, let
me know.

Thanks, Christine Kuper

SPACES

Call to Action

Proposal Deadline March 18, 2005

Take some space. Say your piece.

The Idea

This is an open call to all individuals and groups who want more of a say in
what's happening in our city. Answer the Call to Action, a five-week
campaign of art and activist happenings, part of Dissent: Political Voices
at SPACES Gallery April 15 - June 10 and ongoing at
<http://www.spacesgallery.org/> www.spacesgallery.org.

We must boldly push our dreams into the doorways, parking spaces, apartment
complexes, chain-link fences, brick walls and lobbies of the city we aim to
take back.*

SPACES becomes the hub of interconnected, organically created events and
projects intended to reclaim places and moments in our city. Taking our cue
from similar movements in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and other
places around the country, we hope to bring people in greater Cleveland
together to generate momentum against banality, conformity, boredom,
over-consumption, and despair.

Take over a spot. Make a mark. Put the word out.

We're not just talking about art.

Together, we will create a continuous cycle of interventions, presentations,
broadcasts, community meals, loitering, guerrilla gardening, temporary
constructions, public performances, parties, discussions, and more. Some
things will happen at SPACES, but many will be elsewhere. We're interested
in a wide range of ideas from the community. Please put in a proposal!

Proposals

No reasonable idea will be rejected. However, registration is required to be
included as an official Action. SPACES cannot associate itself with any
violation of the law and shall not be responsible for injury, damage, or
arrest. SPACES support of accepted proposals will be limited to publicity
and a place to convene, we cannot provide money or supplies. We are
especially interested in proposals that include one or more of the
following:

1. Ideas that transform the use of places in Cleveland (you need to work out
your own lawful arrangements for space appropriation). Who tells us how to
behave in our city - the government? advertisements? TV? Make a statement
about what our options are!

2. Collaborations. We are especially interested in bringing together artists
and activists to cooperate on projects. These teams are welcome to meet at
SPACES to coordinate their projects.

3. Projects that address specific political or social issues.

4. Documentation after the fact: video, photos, drawings, recordings, or
even a live poetry or music performance at Friday Night Live.

Please mail proposals by March 18 to: Christine Kuper, Exhibition
Coordinator, SPACES, 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland, OH 44113. Or email
to: ckuper at spacesgallery.org. All proposals must include a contact name,
address, phone number, and email address; brief description of what you want
to do; address (or URL) where it would take place; and date and time (if
applicable).

Nuts and Bolts

All actions must take place between April 15 and May 20. Your moment could
be May 1, 12:00-12:01pm, all five weeks, or anything in between.

April 15, 5-9pm

The public will find out what's happening at the Opening Reception for
Dissent at SPACES, where we will distribute a map and schedule of events.
Not everything needs to be on the map. Certain small guerilla actions might
just sneak up on people. The interactive Dissent website at
www.spacesgallery.org <http://www.spacesgallery.org/> acts as the hub of
the conversation.

May 20, 5-11pm

The culmination of the Call to Action: SPACES Gallery becomes the place to
meet and find out what happened. Bring videos, photos, notes, and other
evidence to share. From 8-11pm, Friday Night Live music and other
performances begin.

Now get out there!
