Wooster Digital Film Experience Returns to The College of Wooster
Screen writing, acting, directing and shooting to be covered during
weeklong camp, July 16-24

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Wooster Digital Film Experience, a screenwriting,
acting and directing camp for students ages 13-18, returns to The
College of Wooster July 16-24. Directed by Ansley Valentine and Shirley
Huston-Findley, both assistant professors of theatre at Wooster, the
nine-day film camp covers film writing, producing, and scriptwriting.
The fee for the camp, which includes filming equipment, printing
services, insurance, on-campus housing for eight nights, and three
meals each day, is $690.

“This camp is for students who are curious about the art and craft of
film making,” said Valentine. “We will introduce young adults to the
process of writing and producing stories for the screen.

“Instructors and counselors are dedicated to providing a creative,
nurturing, and intellectual environment, in which we explore the art
and craft of filmmaking from idea to reality,” added Valentine. “With a
ratio of one professor and one camp counselors for every 10 students,
campers are certain to get excellent individual as well as the
necessary group collaboration skills necessary in the film industry.”

The camp begins with three days of intensive script writing
instruction. Working in groups, students will develop 10-minute short
scripts highlighting strong story lines, believable characters and
exciting dialogue. Students will then “pitch” their scripts in a
selection process. Chosen scripts will be filmed, allowing students to
experience acting, directing and producing. Students will also serve as
crew members, and learn about digital video cameras, sound, editing,
lighting, location scouting, and other skills required to produce an
independent short. The schedule will vary based on the production and
instructional needs of the process. Days will include writing, filming
and editing. Nights will be free for film viewing or relaxation.

Campers are asked to bring their own laptop or desktop computer for
screenwriting. For those without computers, a small computer lab will
be available. Cameras and all filming equipment will be provided at the
camp, but participants may also bring their own video camera.

Valentine and Huston-Findley are trained in screenwriting and film
production, and together they bring years of theatre and film
experience to the classroom. Valentine studied acting for the camera in
Chicago, and film directing at the International Film and Television
Workshops. He holds a degree in directing from Indiana University.
Huston-Findley teaches a variety of courses, including the history,
literature and theory of theatre. She has also served as a Writing
Fellow at the College, teaches play writing, and has written her own
screenplay entitled Time Slips.
