IN THE THEATRE - Friday, March 25 - 8:00 PM - Stocker Arts Center Film
Series
FILM - "TO BE AND TO HAVE”

2002 (G) 104 min. France/subtitles Director: Nicolas Philibert
Cast: Georges Lopez and his students

Winner of the European Documentary Award and a favorite at all the major
film
festivals, "TO BE AND TO HAVE" is set in a one-room, all grades rural
schoolhouse
in France and presided over by a remarkably dedicated and effective
teacher,
Georges Lopez. We are introduced to the schoolroom via two pet turtles
that lumber
past a globe, alerting us to readjust our sense of time and scale. Our
pace is that of
the seasons, evoked in lyrical interludes of snow, rain, and sun daubing
the Auvergne
countryside. Our sphere is one in which grammar lessons, playground
scuffles, and
close encounters with pancake batter and copy machines become deeply
moving
and frequently hilarious (but never corny or cute) episodes in the grand
drama of
discovering one’s self, the world, and one’s place in the world. The
film seems
closer not to other documentaries but to humanist masterpieces such as
“THE
BICYCLE THIEF,” “LATE SPRING,” and “THE WHITE BALLOON” that invest small

everyday incidents with vast universal significance. Philibert said, “I
was convinced
that a child struggling with subtraction could become a real epic.” Or,
as one critic put
it, "TO BE AND TO HAVE" is a big adventure in a tiny room.”

“TO BE AND TO HAVE” is not just a heartwarming tale of cute kids and
their
dedicated teacher; it’s also a beautiful and inspirational film that
follows the teacher
and his students over the course of one entire academic year. It takes
a warm and
serene look at the primary education process at its best. Magic and
poetic, this a
film of small miracles, one of the most emotionally gratifying movies
about teaching
ever made.

If you missed it when it played in the area before, don’t miss the
opportunity to see
this moving meditation on the seasons of life.
