joe.....unfortunately, naming the production company is NOT irrellevant to
the point at all.... there will always be producers/companies (especially local
car dealerships) that refuse to pay talent, and there will always be actors
(like you) wanting to participate in these on camera shoots for the fun and
experience. You are absolutely right....had you asked for pay, they would NOT
have used you.
BUT....
The awareness that Jean has initiated will best be realized when the people
casting talent for commercial gain are FORCED to pay the talent. The only way
they will EVER be forced into that position (outside of using their friends
and relatives), is if actors like you, even if you desperately want the on
camera exposure STOP responding to their "work for free" notices.

The hope is that eventually they will get tired of using their friends and
relatives and work some money into the budget to hire REAL actors!

I'm pretty sure this is the hopefull scenerio for this meeting / forum:
Advertising guy (like Brown & Miller), hires a casting director (like me) to
hire talent for an upcoming commercial shoot. He tells me he will pay me,
but he can't pay the actors....(no money in the budget for talent). I post a
"work for experience only" notice and NO ONE responds because everybody is
standing together and saying NO. I would have to go back to Brown & Miller and
tell them that there are no actors in Cleveland willing to do it for free. I
will be released from the job and Brown & Miller will find the talent themselves
by going to their friends and relatives. The commercials will suck because
friends and relatives are typically AWFUL, and the Dealership that hired Brown
& Miller to run their ads are NOT HAPPY!!!! It would only be a matter of
time before they would realize that they must include funds in the budget so
they can hire REAL talent, so they can make GOOD commercials and their clients
will be HAPPY!!!

As a casting director, I have been put in this position many times. I'm
sick of it too.....I agree with Tom Fulton and many of the other posters who KNOW
that these bozos can certainly pay the talent.

I am not optimistic that people like you will refuse appearances in
commercials just because there is NO PAY!!! I know for a fact because I've been doing
this for 15 years that if I DID post a "work for experience only" notice,
that I would get at least 50 replys of willing actor wannabe's!

I for one, no longer will accept COMMERCAIL casting assignments that don't
pay the actors.

MY ADVICE TO THOSE SEEKING EXPERIENCE: audition and/or try to participate
in local COMMUNITY THEATRE and non-profit productions. Auditioning and
accepting roles for local filmmmakers with no budgets to speak of is also a great
way to feel ok about not getting paid. There are many rewards to be
had.....beyond that....ask to be paid! Especially for commercials! ESPECIALLY FOR
CAR DEALERSHIPS.
