Kent State's Kent Dance Ensemble's Annual Concert Features Revitalized
Works from Acclaimed Guest Artists and Dance Faculty Members

Kent, Ohio - On April 1, 2, and 3, 2005, Kent State University's School of
Theatre and Dance will proudly present "In Concert 2005", Kent Dance
Ensemble's annual main stage concert in E. Turner Stump Theatre in the Music
& Speech Center on Kent's main campus. Performances begin at 8 p.m. on
April 1st and 2nd and at 2 p.m. on April 3rd .

Twelve dancers representing the Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in dance
performance and dance education will perform a stimulating program of new
and revitalized works from three guest artists and three Kent State dance
faculty members. Guest artists include Cliff Keuter, Robin Pettersen and
Shannon Preto. KSU Dance Faculty includes Melanie George, Kimberly Karpanty
and Barbara Allegra Verlezza.

Internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Cliff Keuter worked with
many of the historic giants of modern dance, including: Martha Graham, Anna
Sokolow, Jose Limon, Daniel Nagrin, Helen Tamiris and Paul Taylor. He
formed the Cliff Keuter Dance Company in New York from 1969-1970, and has
taught at several universities in New York, California and Arizona. He and
his wife Elina Mooney were in residency in the Dance Division from February
14 - 19 teaching classes in technique and composition, and staging "Women
Song." The ensemble work for nine dancers is set to Handel's Concerti
Grossi, Opus 6. The Keuter/Mooney residency was supported by the Kent Dance
Association and the School of Theatre and Dance's William H. Zucchero Guest
Artist Endowment.

"Dream" was commissioned from choreographer Robin Pettersen, dance faculty
member at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. "Dream" incorporates two
large bookcases which give a sense of home, or comfort, for the dancers.
Movement out of the set pieces has a sense of exploration and adventure;
there is no literal implication of sleeping or dreaming, just images that
are fleeting, some tender, some harsh.

An alumni of both Kent State University and the Kent Dance Ensemble, Shannon
Preto's returned with a highly athletic and intricate quartet that takes
audience members on a visual pleasure cruise. "Shifting Focus" aims to
focus the stage picture towards different places and dancers, and to
different elements of the theatrical experience.

Faculty work this year includes Assistant Professor Barbara Verlezza's new
trio, "Triptych," which includes two 'stand-up' dancers from the Kent Dance
Ensemble partnering with a 'sit-down' dancer (a wheelchair user). Guest
performer Katie Bliss is an 11th grader from Cuyahoga Falls High School.
This collaboration is the first such partnership in the history of the Kent
Dance Ensemble. "Shouts, Smears and Muted Rhapsodies" is inspired by the
love of jazz, the power of the blues, and the strength of women. Set to the
music of Billie Holiday and the text and music of Charles Mingus, this trio
is an improvisation-based work that creates structure from the dancers'
natural response to music. Assistant Professor Melanie George dedicates the
piece to her father, who taught her how to listen to jazz music. Closing the
concert is Artistic Director Kimberly Karpanty's "Stairway," created for the
entire 12-member ensemble last fall. Using images and characters born in
the minds and imaginations of the performers, the dance exists between
fantasy and reality. This multi-media work is accompanied by the well-known
song by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, photos by photographer Jack Cochran,
and several new technologies such as video projection and wearable LED
lighting.

The Kent Dance Ensemble: In Concert 2005 will be performed in E. Turner
Stump Theatre located in the Music and Speech building on Kent's main
campus. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 8:00pm, with a
Sunday matinee at 2:00pm. To confirm your date of attendance, please call
the School of Theatre and Dance Box Office at (330) 672-2497 between noon
and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday to reserve your complimentary tickets.
General admission is $12; $10 for seniors, KSU faculty and alumni; $8 for
students with a valid ID. There will be a reception following the Saturday
evening performance and we would love to meet you! Please contact Artistic
Director Kimberly Karpanty at (330) 672-0127 for further information on the
Ensemble's other upcoming performances and outreach programs.
