Charles Kanwischer - New Drawings

=20

CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 31th, 2005)- New drawings by Ohio-based Charles
Kanwischer will be on display at raw & co gallery located on 1009
Kenilworth Avenue in Tremont from April 8th, 2005 through May 8th, 2005

=20

Charles Kanwischer received his undergraduate degree in Printmaking from
the University of Iowa in 1985 and then went on to earn an M.F.A Degree
in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale University School of Art in
1987.=20

Presently he is the assistant professor and heads the drawing area in
the Art department at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green
Ohio.=20

His work can be found in both public and private collections including
the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the
Smith College Museum of Art.

=20

Charles Kanwischers is attracted to domestic architectural landscape art
that depicts contemporary life with its compelling imagery in its
ordinariness. His subjects come from the kind of disposable real estate
magazines found in supermarkets. Their low resolution and contrast force
him to scrutinize and interpret what he sees. Houses are at once
completely common and absolutely specific. Most houses are pretty much
like all other houses and yet they are the repositories of the most
intimate aspect of our lives. They are a kind of crucible for the
formation of our psyches, the location of events and sensations that for
better or worse condition our sense of well being. The images are made
with graphite pencil, powdered graphite, and traditional silverpoint on
paper coated with gesso that is mounted on panels to create a three
dimensionality. Both the barely visible traces of the hand of the artist
and the sculptural presence cause the viewer to question what we
normally conceive as a drawing.

The material/physical aspects of the work are just as important as what
the drawings depict and the particularities of structure and surface are
completely available to the viewer. Even though the work is presented in
the black and white documentary style, the work is still open for
personal interpretation.=20

=20

The opening reception is Friday April 8th from 6-10 pm.
