SPLIT SECOND by Dennis McIntyre
Running Through April 24, 2005

Lisa Langford is a compelling Alea, fighting to maintain her life with =
Val. As Rusty on this night (the father's role is also double-cast with =
Van Jackson), Cornell Calhoun III hit a true balance between love for =
his son and his commitment to honorable policing. Christine Howey, =
Cleveland Scene=20

In "Split Second," director Terrence Spivey has once again chosen a =
timely and provocative play that sheds light on the African-American =
experience.
Lisa Langford triumphs as Val's protective wife Alea, who loves her =
husband and wants to keep him out of harm's way at all costs. Alea's =
soul-stirring speech gives voice to the dilemma facing Val: If he tells =
the truth, he loses everything in life he has fought for; if he lies, he =
forfeits his soul. Sparks fly whenever the talented actress is on stage.
Russell Brown balances nervous edginess with raw fear as the white =
petty thief William H. Willis, who provokes the policeman.
A painted urban backdrop in shades of black, gray and white, fronted by =
floor-to-ceiling panels of chain link fencing, serve as a riveting =
visual metaphor for the drama.=20
Costumer Kathryn L. Tobasko creates a symbol for the spilled blood =
that weighs on both husband and wife's consciences in Val's blood-red =
shirt and Alea's bright crimson robe.
The final scene, a stunning coup de th=E9=E2tre brilliantly staged by =
director Spivey, raises more questions than it answers. Fran Heller, =
Cleveland Jewish News
