Friend of Laramie Murder Victim and=20
Civil Rights Activist, Romaine Patterson to Speak at Kent State on April =
23.

=20

Kent, Ohio =96 In conjunction with Kent State=92s University=92s =
presentation of
the award-winning docu-drama, The Laramie Project, guest speaker Romaine
Patterson will visit Kent State=92s main campus on Saturday, April 23, =
2005.
Patterson, friend of hate-crime murder victim Matthew Shepard now turned
civil rights activist for women, minorities and homosexuals, will speak =
at
7:30 p.m. in Wright-Curtis Theatre prior to the 8 p.m. performance. A
post-show question and answer session will also take place.

Patterson is best known for her work combating the anti-gay antics of =
the
Rev. Fred Phelps, whose followers picketed Shepard's funeral and the =
murder
trials. In April of 1999, she founded Angel Action, an organization for
peaceful demonstration. Angel Action is now used all over the world as a
means of combating hate.

Taking her activism to the next level, Patterson went to work as the
Regional Media Manager for The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against =
Defamation
(GLAAD) in February of 2000.

Her work around the hateful lyrics of Eminem allowed Patterson to =
fulfill
her goal of educating young people. In efforts to work with gay youth,
Patterson spent a great deal of time speaking at colleges and high =
schools
around the country on a variety of issues. She has always maintained =
that
educating today's youth is the key to putting a stop to hate as she
continues to work with the Matthew Shepard Foundation to meet this end.

Patterson returned to school at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and
Sciences in the fall of 2001 in order to further her knowledge of the =
media
industry. As a top graduate of the Conservatory's Master Recording =
Program
in May of 2001 she moved to New York City where she currently resides.=20

Currently, Romaine is Co-host and Producer of =93Derek and Romaine=94 a =
popular
talk show that features a wild array of uncensored topics and guests. =
=93Derek
and Romaine=94 hits the airwaves nation wide weekdays from 6-10pm EST. =
As a
team =93Derek and Romaine=94 are dedicated to helping raise funds for a =
variety
of charitable causes including the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the =
Sea
Coast AIDS Walk.

The event on April 23 is co-sponsored by Kent State University=92s =
School of
Theatre & Dance, Honors College, Office of Diversity and Academic
Initiatives, Women=92s Studies Program and Pride! Kent.

The Roe Green Visiting Director Series presents The Laramie Project =
April 15
=96 24 in Wright-Curtis Theatre, Music & Speech Center on Kent State=92s =
Main
Campus. Directed by Sue Ott Rowlands. Written by Mois=E9s Kaufman and =
The
Members of Tectonic Theater, =93The Laramie Project=94 is a documentary =
drama
which depicts the reactions of Laramie, Wyoming residents to the 1998 =
murder
of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student. His murder was brutal in the
extreme and the two young men who committed it then left him barely =
alive,
tied to a post for 18 hours before he was found and, five days later, =
died.
This true story describes what happens to a small-town community after =
this
heinous hate crime.

School of Theatre & Dance performances are Tuesday =96 Saturday at 8 PM =
and
Sunday at 2 PM. Both theatres, E. Turner Stump and Wright-Curtis, are
located in the Music & Speech Center on Main Street on the main campus =
of
Kent State University.=20
Tickets are $12 adults, $10 seniors, KSU Alumni and Faculty and $8 =
students
with valid ID or under 18. The School of Theatre & Dance Box Office is
located in the Music & Speech Center and is open 12 p.m. =96 5 p.m. =
