the long tone in a group setting. Playing long tones as a meditation.
Hand strengthening exercises and other tortures. Great chance to talk

Witness this one-man-trio interact and spar in a collaborative cinematic
event. Tom will be joined by local multi-instrumentalist David Badagnani
and a special guest percussionist, and dancers Beth Salemi Szpak and
Chlo=EB Hopson for a set at 9:30pm.=20

Also for the acoustic bassists in the area Tom will be hosting a
workshop called =93Bass Camp=94 at 4pm. (details below**)

As one of avant-garde=92s most in-demand bassists, Tom Abbs has appeared
on countless performances and recordings with such luminaries as Charles
Gayle, Butch Morris, Cooper-Moore and Jemeel Moondoc. At the height of
his improvising and compositional skill, Tom brings you the
groundbreaking experience of =93Multifarious=94. In collaboration with
renowned painter M.P. Landis, Tom has crafted a seamless and symbiotic
masterpiece of sight and sound.=20

A vision realized, sonically and visually.

=93Multifarious=94 was inspired by the visualization of sound as texture =
and
color. Tom and painter M.P. Landis have taken the compositions of
=93Multifarious=94 and brought them to life on film. By incorporating =
the
linear compositional structures and emotional content of the music into
the process of painting they have achieved a visual and auditory
experience that unfolds symbiotically before your eyes.

A trio of one mind.

While paying homage to the great one-man band improvisers of the idiom
such as Rahsaan Roland

Kirk and Jerome Cooper, Tom Abbs aims to push the art form forward. =
It=92s
hard to imagine someone being able to play simultaneously two of the
largest instruments out there, the acoustic bass and the tuba, but for
Tom Abbs this quest has been one of necessity: =93It haunts me. I play =
the
bass and I hear the tuba soaring over it. I play the tuba and I want to
feel the strings under my fingers. I hear percussive sounds accenting
everything. I=92m obsessed by it. It=92s a sound in my head that I =
can=92t
escape.=94 After twenty years of switching between the bass and the =
tuba,
Tom is finally playing both at the same time. The development of a
patent-pending harness, mouthpiece extension

and valve pedal system have allowed Tom to play the tuba while keeping
his hands completely free for the bass. The additions of a modified mini
drum kit and foot percussion make the sound complete. These innovations
have taken Tom to a new plane as a soloist. Winds, strings and
percussion simultaneously. The sound of a trio coming from one
performer.

Tom Abbs

(bass, tuba, percussion, compositions, video direction)

Bassist, tubist and improviser Tom Abbs has been performing and
recording in a variety of contexts(classical, rock, jazz, and improvised
musics) for the past 20 years. A Seattle native, Tom relocated to New
York in 1991 where he studied with such masters as Reggie Workman,
Buster Williams, Joe Chambers, Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton and Arthur
Taylor. In the past decade Tom has developed a driving percussive style
on the bass that encompasses the deep emotion and grit of Charles Mingus
and Jimmy Garrison while showing the dexterity and inventiveness of
Scott La Faro. His fluid tuba style has shed many of the instrument=92s
sluggish connotations and transformed

it into a soaring solo and sharply percussive groove machine. Equally
comfortable in =93free=94 and =93inside=94 settings, Abbs=92 versatility =
and depth
as a player has kept him busy backing up the likes of Lawrence =
=93Butch=94
Morris, Charles Gayle, Daniel Carter, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell Jr.,
Sabir Mateen, Jemeel Moondoc, Assif Tahar, Borah Bergman, Billy Bang,
Andrew Lamb, Warren Smith and many others. Tom is currently a member of
the collective experimental trio, Triptych Myth with Cooper-Moore and
Chad Taylor (Hopscotch Records) and is leading his own group, =
=93Frequency

M.P. Landis

M.P. Landis moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1996 after living in Provincetown,
MA year-round for eight years. Since then, his work has become less
dependent on the figure and more poetic and open. His current work is a
palimpsest of direct inspiration such as music (often avant-garde jazz),
poetry, nature, and the process and emotions of everyday experience.
Collaboration is another significant component of Landis s art. He has
painted on stage with musicians, dancers, and poets from the New York
jazz scene, and his paintings and photographs have been used for various
CD releases and poetry books. He is also involved in ongoing
collaborations via the U.S. Postal Service with

visual artists Paul Bowen and Bert Yarborough and with poet Nick Flynn,
among others. M.P. Landis is currently in a two-person show at the Peng
Gallery in Philadelphia. His work has also recently been exhibited at
Gallery Espejo 5 in Madrid, Spain, with another show in Madrid slated
for fall 2004 at Peccato Veniale. He is also co-curating an exhibition
of twenty artists with upcoming shows in New York City and Phoenix, AZ.
This summer, he will be teaching a class at the Fine ArtsWorks Center in
Provincetown, and will show his work at Provincetown=92s Schoolhouse
Center in September.

David Badagnani is working on his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Kent State
University. Although he performs on a wide variety of instruments, he
specializes in wind instruments (oboe, english horn, guan, sona, sheng,
khaen). David has the amazing ability to play Western wind instruments
in non- Western tunings. He is also an authority on rap music from
around the world.
