James Levin Theatre

Ohio Premiere!

CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland Public Theatre’s Executive/Artistic Director Randy
Rollison is proud to announce the company’s third collaboration with
TITLEWave theatre. In Adam Rapp’s play Stone Cold Dead Serious, audiences
are introduced to the very dysfunctional Ledbetter family. Directed by
TITLEWave theatre artistic director Gregory Vovos, the cast includes Stephen
Dale, Meg Kelly Schroeder, Robert Ellis, Magdalyn Donnelly, and Arthur
Grothe. Running in the James Levin Theatre, Stone Cold Dead Serious
previews June 1 and 2, and opens Friday, June 3, 2005.

Rapp introduces The Ledbetters, that family down the street whose house no
one in the neighborhood has ever been inside. Among this clan of dropouts,
junkies, and QVC addicts is father Cliff, who is wasting away on workmen’s
comp; Linda, the mother, obsessed with the lives of the saints and
supporting her family as an overworked waitress; and their junkie daughter
Shaylee. Rounding out the family is teenage son Wynne, who takes a chance
to save them from themselves by winning a million bucks playing a real-life
version of a computer game. Or, he'll battle to his death trying. Join CPT
for another high-octane ride from TITLEWave theatre, co-producers of last
season’s Wait! and Charge.

Gregory and Jean Marie Vovos founded TITLEWave theatre because of a strong
belief: a need for more original plays produced in the Cleveland area.
Because of the curiosity they find in Northeast Ohio audience members and
theatre artists alike, they believe Cleveland will embrace new works.
Fortunate to have an extensive background in new plays as well as
relationships with many talented playwrights, they decided to focus their
attention solely on the production of new work. States Gregory Vovos,
“While traditional and classical drama allow us to understand the universal
qualities that have carried from generation to generation, nothing can give
us better insight into the world we live in today than work that is created
by artists of our lifetime.”

This is the third collaboration between TITLEWave and CPT. Last season they
produced Julie Jensen’s Wait! and Eric Kaiser’s Charge.

Playwright Adam Rapp has been the recipient of the Herbert & Patricia
Brodkin Scholarship, two Lincoln Center le Compte de Nuoy Awards, a
fellowship to the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, the 1999 Princess
Grace Award for Playwrighting, a 2000 Roger L. Stevens Award from the
Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, a 2000 Suite Residency with
Mabou Mines, the 2001 Helen Merrill Award for Emerging Playwrights, Boston’s
Elliot Norton Award, and was short-listed for the 2003 William Saroyan
International Prize for Writing. His plays include Nocturne (A.R.T.,
Off-Broadway at NYTW), Ghosts in the Cottonwoods (Victory Gardens; The
Arcola, London), Animals and Plants (A.R.T.), Blackbird (The Bush, London;
Pittsburgh City Theatre; Off-Broadway with Edge Theater), Stone Cold Dead
Serious (A.R.T., Off-Broadway with Edge Theater), Finer Noble Gases (26th
Annual Humana Festival of New American Plays, Off-Broadway at Rattlestick),
Faster (Off-Broadway at Rattlestick), Trueblinka (Off-Broadway at the
Maverick Theater), Dreams of the Salthorse (Encore, S.F.), and Gompers
(Pittsburgh City Theatre; The Arcola, London). Broadway Play Publishing
publishes his first anthology of plays, Plays by Adam Rapp. His new
collection of plays, Stone Cold Dead Serious and Other Plays, is available
in a trade edition by Faber & Faber. He recently completed post-production
on his first feature film, Winter Passing, starring Ed Harris, Will Ferrell,
and Zooey Deschanel, which will be released in theaters this fall. He is
the author of the young adult novels Missing the Piano
(Viking/HarperCollins), The Buffalo Tree (Front Street/HarperCollins), The
Copper Elephant (Front Street/HarperCollins), 33 Snowfish (Candlewick
Press), and Under the Wolf, Under the Dog (Candlewick Press), which was
short-listed for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Upcoming projects
include the graphic novel Decelerate Blue for the new imprint First Second,
the adult novel The Year of Endless Sorrows, which will be published by
Farrar Strauss & Giroux in the spring of ’06, and his new play, Red Light
Winter, which he is directing at Steppenwolf this May. A graduate of Clarke
College in Dubuque, IA, Mr. Rapp also completed a two-year playwriting
fellowship at Juilliard. He currently lives in New York City, where he is
the resident playwright for Edge Theater Company.

Additionally, June at CPT will include a second area premiere from Rapp, his
play Nocturne. This heartbreaking solo piece looks at one man’s journey
through loss as he deals with his young sister’s accidental death at his own
hand. The play features Dan Kilbane, is directed by CPT associate artistic
director Jyana S. Gregory, and designed by Earl Z. Browne III. Nocturne
runs June 5 - 15, 2005, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. All
tickets for this production are $10.

The cast of Stone Cold Dead Serous includes two local Equity actors, Robert
Ellis and Meg Kelly Schroeder, along with Stephen Dale, Magdalyn Donnelly
and Arthur Grothe. Ellis is head of the theatre department at Cuyahoga
Community College-West and is a longtime member of Cabaret Dada. Schroeder
trained at William Esper Studios in NYC and holds a BFA in Acting & Art
History from Ohio University. She recently appeared in A Streetcar Named
Desire (Stella) at Porthouse Theater. Stephen Dale holds a BFA in acting
from Ohio University and was recently seen in CPT’s Big [BOX] in the staged
reading Citizenship in the Nation. Magdalyn Donnelly works as an
actor-teacher for Great Lakes Theatre Festival. Arthur Grothe is on the
faculty at Cuyahoga Community College-West, where he recently played the
title role in Macbeth. He was also in the cast of Citizenship in the
Nation.

Equity (Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and
stage managers in the United States, appearing under special contract)
contracts for Stone Cold Dead Serious are made possible through the generous
support of the Cleveland Theatre Collective. The Danny Morris Equity
Contract and Non-Equity Stipend are awards created by CTC to promote the use
of local professional Equity members and experienced non-Equity actors in
productions in mid-to smaller sized Cleveland theaters. The Equity Contract
award is named after Cleveland actor Danny Morris, who was an active member
of the Actors Equity Association, the American Federation of Television and
Radio Arts, and the Screen Actors Guild, who died in September 1998.

Gregory Vovos (director), TITLEWave's artistic director, is a playwright and
director whose work has been seen at many theatres in the Cleveland area.
His plays have been produced all over the country and as far away as
Belgrade and Australia. Recently, Madlab Theater in Columbus produced his
play Today’s Special. He earned his MFA in Playwriting from the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he studied with Julie Jensen. Vovos met Jensen
while working towards his B.A. in English from The Ohio State University.
While at UNLV, he was the president of the Graduate Playwright's
organization and producer of Poor Playwrights' Theatre, a theatre company
that exclusively produced original plays. He and Maggie Winn-Jones
co-founded The Asylum Theatre, a professional theatre in Las Vegas also
committed to producing new plays. Vovos taught playwriting, theatre history
and theatre appreciation at UNLV. Because of his experience as a playwright
in CPT’s New Plays Festival in 1997, he knew that he wanted to practice
theater in his hometown city of Cleveland. Upon graduating in 1998, he
returned to Cleveland, where he directed for CPT's New Plays Festival,
worked as a playwright, actor and director for Dobama's Night Kitchen, and
then joined the Board of Directors at Charenton Theater Company, for whom he
directed both Park Bench Tour productions of The Zoo Story and I’m Not
Rappaport. These experiences and his strong desire to get back into the
business of producing new plays led him to form TITLEWave. Last year he
directed their first two critically acclaimed productions Wait! and Charge
at CPT. He has monologues published by Dramatic Publishing, plays by PPT
Press and www.originalworksonline.com, as well as several plays posted on
www.theatrehistory.com. He teaches playwriting at the Beck Center for the
Arts. A member of the Cleveland Theater Collective, Vovos was awarded a CTC
2004 Achievement Award for his direction of Wait!

Jean Marie Vovos, TITLEWave’s managing director, has been working in
Cleveland theater since 1999, most notably as a producer. Recent credits
include TITLEWave’s productions of Wait! and Charge. She has also worked
for another nonprofit organization since 1989. As manager, Jean helped
bring the then-bankrupt library cooperative into solvency. In addition to
her work at the nonprofit, she also manages a large out-of-print book
company. Jean oversees hundreds of client accounts and is in charge of human
resources. She has filled much of her spare time teaching at Cuyahoga
Community College and mentoring at various local organizations, including
Project Learn, as well as after school tutoring for inner city schools. She
holds a BA in English from Cleveland State University and her thesis paper
on Feminist Novels of the '70s was presented at the 2003 National Popular
Culture Conference.

The production staff includes Trad A Burns (set and light design), Alison
Hernan (costume design), Bill Amato (sound design), Alison Hernan (costume
design), and Doug Alden (production stage management).
